I picked up a fresh pack of WY2565 from the LHBS today, took it home and activated it. I smacked per the instructions as I've always done--a good slap between the palms but not too hard. A section of the seam along the upper left edge failed and about half the liquid yeast shot across my kitchen. The seam failed right at the point of the tear notch and there was a 1" area of the seam that came open.

Anyone else have this happen? I'd like to think it was an outlier and that the seam was not quite right on this one. Luckily, my LHBS is only a few miles away and I returned it for another.

A few months back it happened to me. And like you I've used those many many times with no similar issues.

Happened to me a few years ago, twice. I use White Labs now. I'd like to claim it's due to my awesome strength....

Never happened to me but I mostly use WhiteLabs. I've been wanting to switch to WYeast (1056 instead of WLP001 for example) though so maybe my time is coming!

Never seen it burst, but the package IS too complicated and I am not surprised that this happened. I just had a package that felt slightly swollen when it arrived and due to the pressure it was difficult to locate the inner pack. I was also too scared to hit the swollen package hard enough and I actually thought that the nutrient pack might have been broken in transit. So I just opened it with scissors and found that everything was ok (except maybe light pressure inside) and the inner pack was untouched. Anyway, the yeast seems to grow happily even if you don't break the nutrient pack so most of the time it is kinda useless, at least if the yeast is not too old. But they have a nice range of strains available and each time the yeast itself has been in good condition.

I've never had that happen, but now that it was mentioned, next time I actually buy yeast I'll make sure not to position the nutrient pack in the corner with the cut. For sure I've never paid any attention to that...

Cheers!
