So I have never made beer and was wondering what the difference was between wort and malt extract.

Also can I ferment malt extracts?

Malt Extract (either liquid or dry - known as LME & DME respectively) is concentrated wort. Extract brewing is adding water to malt extract and boiling (usually for 60 minutes). Wort is the final product before adding the yeast to ferment.

Yup. Wort is what you wind up with, regardless of steeping, mashing or extract that you do your boil with & then add to the fermenter.

It is my understanding that malt extracts are so concentrated that very little can grow in them at all, so they must be diluted to regular wort concentrations before you can ferment them.

Malt Extract is just one of the ingredients to make wort......
Well ....... actually the wort was made in a factory using ingredients. Malt extract is condensed wort, not one of the ingredients in wort.

Maybe you meant, it's one of the ingredients that can be used to make beer? ;)

OK so I was asking this because I want to make a braggiot. Does anyone know of an easy recipe for someone who primarily makes mead?
