Is it still called wort in the fermenter? First the concern, then how I got here. Pretty new at it only 14 batches but never had this happen before. The wort turned a weird orange y opaque color after I pitched the starter. It's got some foam and it's bubbling after 48 hrs. But it's a solid color like no drop or floctuation occured. It's an 072 OG IPA BIAB and I'm thinking I did the starter wrong. I just saved a couple of jars from my last batch and got it going on the stir plate for 24 hrs before I pitched. Just read today you should grow yeast fresh not left over. I mashed at 155 for 60 minutes but couldn't mash out cause of new equip. issues. Tried a conduction burner for the first time but my 15 gal. pot overwhelmed it. Held 155 great but took forever to get it to boil. Chilled it quick after 60min. boil and oxygenated it and pitched. There's alot of things I'm leaving out I'm sure, but maybe with this much someone can tell me what to do about it or just relax and be patient. It's now 4 days in and it still looks the same. Should I pitch some more yeast, got some dry on hand, or just wait?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Once yeast is pitched it goes from being called wort to beer. Instantly.

I use slurry from prior brews (unwashed collected into sanitized jars from the FV). No problems there. Starter if indicated based on the calculated viability of the yeast. Newer data by Woodlandbrews supports the idea that the yeast remain much more viable than previously thought.

The color change could be related to what color brew the slurry originated from. Not good to pitch a stout harvested slurry into a blonde ale. Color aside I think the flavor impact will be minimal and the color is likely to be less undesirable that you think. Color of beer in the carboy is so hard to judge especially during an opaque ferment even with a class FV.

I would not be overly concerned.

Thanks for the calming Gavin. The slurry came from a similar beer. It's funny because in the Hydro. tube it really separated out but in the fermenter it's just a solid mass of the same thick looking beer. Do you think in time it will just drop out and clear a bit?

An OG of 1.072 takes longer to ferment out than a 1.050 OG so your yeast are active much longer than you are expecting. The opaque is because of the yeast stirring up the trub with their activity. BIAB tend to have more trub so that might be contributing factor. Wait a few days and see if the yeast starts to settle out.

Almost everything will clear on its own eventually. Let it finish fermenting and give it another week, I bet it will look way better by then

No worries.

Yes. It will settle out in time. No problem Had a worry wart moment myself with a slurry of 1028 just last week. Used a pint in a 5.5 gallon batch. No starter and it took about 36hours to kick off.

My point is that these worry wart moments happen us all. The old mantra of Relax etc....homebrew.. yada yada.... applies
