so, I wake up this morning, and the one gallon test batch of strawberry wine I have in a one gallon water jug downstairs seems to have gone nuts! The rubber stopper/valve popped right off and wine was dripping down the side. I noticed yesterday that the valve was sucking in some wine. (batch was made only 2 days ago.). What should I do? Is it probably contaminated? Can I add a campden tablet? Should I have put in a loosely covered bucket at first before outting in a vessel with valve? Am I am IDIOT for trying ti use a one gallon water jug???

help! :)

I always start my wine in a bucket with a old t-shirt over the top. I dont

think adding campden now will do anything but slow the yeast down. Im

sure it will be fine, because if its fermenting as violently as you say it is then

nothing would be able to fall in. next time you start a wine do it in a

bucket and rack it to a glass carboy after 4-5 days after ferment begins

I think you'll be fine, just clean up the outside of your fermenter along with your stopper & airlock. You could cover the opening with a towel & wait for the fermentation to calm down enough to safely replace your stopper/airlock. Or you could rig a blow-off tube, which is basically some tubing that runs from your stopper & into a bucket of water. After it calms down replace the stopper/airlock. Regards, GF.

I stirred my pyment the other day and apparently there was more CO2 in solution than I thought cause it came shooting out the top. All I could do was stand there and watch my carpet get covered in red wine...the wife was none too happy about that. God bless oxyclean, it saved my marriage!
