I started my first batch in my FF last night with the Orchard Breezin' Peach Perfection Wine Kit. I checked it approx 12 hours later and saw slow airlock bubbling and what looks like a 1/2" of lees already accumulating in the collection ball. Is that amount of lees normal after just 12 hours?

That's not lees, its yeast. Lees will form when the yeast die.

I think that you are not supposed to have the bottom valve open until after the yeast has done the majority of its work, the convection currents and CO2 production in the wine will keep it mixed up. (At least that's what I read about conicals). The collection jar is just for collection.
