Just a few weekends into my 10-gallon brew sessions, and I'm already storing extra that won't fit in my chillers.

10-gallon brews are sure going to help me stay ahead of the curve.

These are in excess of the four in my freezer and two in the Sanyo.

I'm hoping to get my hands on some free cornies at the end of next week. According to a brewmaster I spoke with recently, when a fair or carnival leaves town they just leave the cornies they were using. Some of those places don't have much running water. He said to be careful because sometimes they will empty their fry-grease into them but they can be cleaned. I'm going to try and pick up a few.
 
Yesterday, my Brew Day went very smoothly, all things considered: 85 litres of IPA in the primary! Wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be to step up to the bigger batches. I hit all my targets, it only seemed to add about an hour or so to my day. The hard part was, well, I still crank my Valley Mill by hand...

In January, I was lucky enough to discover (and buy) the remains of a small BOP, neatly tucked away in storage. I had thought the system would be big enough to do 30 US gallon batches. It certainly swallowed 110litres (pre-boil) no problem, no boilover! I'm working my way up to bigger batches. I've assisted the brewer out at the Pepperwood Brewpub several times, and that experience certainly adds a degree of comfort handling that quantity. Much to my surprise, my efficiency yesterday was over 85%. I shouldn't have been so nervous to go big!

I wondered if, for those that do them, bigger batches are, for want of a better word, "easy". They just seem more forgiving. Easier to hit the target numbers. Easier to maintain temps during the mashing and sparging.

The added benefit of double the beer!

I hear ya' BierMuncher. It's taken me 6 batches since jumping back into the brewing to start getting ahead of the curve. Now I just need to pick up another 6 to 8 cornies so I can keep the stockpile up. I've got 5 in use and only 2 empties. I have 10 gallons of Wit and 5 of Apfelwine in fermenters. I either need to drink 5 gallons of something fast or I'm going to have to bottle something.
 
Man, I have to get cracking. I have not brewed in a few weeks as weekends have been very busy. Time to get started again!

What are you fermenting in? Lets see some pictures (although it could be a sealed up Chevy Nova and I'd still be jealous).

With that much beer, anything I can lay my hands on... Seriously, I use 2 plastics pails, and a 12.2 gal SS conical. They are all full. I couldn't squeeze in another drop. If I do try a 25-30 gallon batch anytime soon, I might just have to try that trick with the chevy nova...:D Five days in primary, then I rack off to 15 gallon corny kegs, which I am lucky enough have several of, part of the same purchase.

wow, I've said it before I can't wait till I have kegs sitting around the house!

I have to agree with you Muncher. 10 gal. is the way to go. For some reason my LHBS owner tired to convince me not to do it. But I built my system with an eye toward doing 10 gal. after I got the technique down. Now that I've done a 10 gal. batch I'm convinced that's the way to go. Not much more time or trouble for 2X the beer what's not to love?

Remember, women aren't strong in the time/space conceptualization department (no offense Yooper). That's why we're always saying..."there's no way that couch will fit through that door...you want to invite how many people into this apartment for thanksgiving?...there's no way we're going to make it on time if we don't leave this instant...."

I'd say as long as your new setup resembles your current setup, she'll never know the diff. :D
