I've prepared a bunch of starters using Wyeast smack packs and been successful. Never done one off an agar slant/White Labs vial. Any different procedures necessary??

I guess I should mention that for a slant (not smack pack or vial) you want to start really small, like 50 ml, and step up a few times.

the only difference is to slowly crack the cap on the vial to release any pressure.

Any specific reason (other than avoiding a mess) to release slowly? Is there enough pressure difference to cause cell damage with a rapid drop to ambient pressure?

No, it's just to avoid spraying yeast all over the place.

LOL, this. I hadn't used white labs in 10 years. Forgot about the pressure build up. Quickly opened up a vial of the San Diego Super strain after shaking. Let's just say I didn't end up brewing that weekend.
