Where to find Frankenheim Alt??

I am having a really hard time finding a place that sells Frankenheim alt, even online. Has anyone had any luck finding this beer? Anyone in SoCal??

No help on tracking it down. I've only seen it once when traveling through Connecticut. The imported alts don't do the ones available in Germany any justice. I think they pasteurize the ones for export and it changes their flavor (sweeter). The alts I've had in Germany are not sweet at all. Malty yes, but not sweet.
 
Most of the Dusseldorf region alts that are not made in the altstadt are fairly sweet fresh, including Frankenheim.

Uerige is fairly sweet too, probably something to do with all the palates of Caramunich they have laying around.

But yeah, the imported beers are typically sweeter than they would be fresh. That's oxidation, not pasteurization.

I was never that impressed with Frankenheim. Uerige is a more interesting beer and more widely available in the US, why not work with a beer store owner to get some of that when a fresh shipment comes in?
 
I've had frankeheim Alt in Dusseldorf and while decent wasn't super impressed with it. I had several other alts that were better but can't remember the names off the top of my head.
Looking back on my notes for Frank it was quite metallic/minerally with a sweet toffey/plum aroma with grainy malt character. Once I picked up that metallic flavor I couldn't get over it and it kinda ruined it for me

However, I apologize that this post does not in any way help you find it in the US

I have always found Uerige altbier to have a nice dry maltiness (although it's been over a year since I've been to Dusseldorf). They use 2.27% caramunich in the grain bill (per the brewers on several tours). They need pallets of it because they make so much beer.

Wow, where do you find Uerige "widely available" and fresh in the US? I have only seen the doppelsticke occasionally in Colorado. Never the normal altbier. The doppelsticke is certainly sweeter (and stronger) than the normal.

All three Uerige varieties are easy to find in Missouri and several of the other states around here.

ETA: The distributor is B United. They also carry Brauerei Heller/Aecht Schlenkerla products. So if you can get those and you can't get Uerige, ask.

Sweetness is relative but Uerige is quite a bit sweeter than, say, Schumacher. 2.25% caramunich is more than zero. They obviously wouldn't add it if they didn't think it was adding something. What caramunich adds is sweetness.
 
Unless it was recently (last year or two) picked up by another distributor stateside, Frankenheim is no longer available. They had a distributor on the east coast for a long time, but that stopped a number of years ago; the last time I researched it was about 4-5 years ago.

So if you want Frankenheim, you'll need to get it imported.
 
I'm pretty astonished that Uerige is available at all in the US... I was workign in Duesseldorf this summer, and it was virtually unavailable in bottles, and on tap in relatively few bars. I also didn't really love Uerige, tasted a bit sweet and with noticable alcohol, I found.
Of the other brands, I would have to say that I rank Frankenheim behind Schloesser, Gatzweiler, and Diebels, the other 3 big local Alts. The flavour didn't quite agree with me, can't remember anything about the flavour in particular.
 
I found a place in Torrance (local to me) that carries Uerige, will give that a try. I have never had Frankenheim, a co-worker of mine had it in Germany and swears by it so I wanted to give it a try. Thanks for all the input. Cheers
 
In this part of Germany it is hard to find Frankenheim. It is a decent beer but nothing memorable. In Southern Germany we prefer Diebels Alt.
