when to secondary

usually i just keep my brews in primary for 2 weeks then throw into secondary and so far its been fine. but this is my first high gravity brew with an og of 1.096 and i was wondering at what gravity i should put it into secondary?

I would skip the secondary and leave it in Primary for a month. Try it. You'll like it.

You should always leave a beer in the primary until it has reached his final gravity. A beer that big I would leave in the primary for at least a month. Many don't bother to secondary, but if you choose to....you should make sure it's done. Moving it to early will/can be detrimental to your brews. Often if moved to early they won't ferment out and you'll end up with an overly sweet beer, or worse yet, bottle bombs.

+1 on skipping secondary and waiting quite a while.

For a beer that big I would absolutley take gravity readings until you get down to a steady FG...and hopefully that number is 1.015 or less. You certainly want to make sure you get a complete fermentation.

I'll secondary if it's just a slight bit off from the target FG. I have found that the movement wakes things up enough to get the job finished.

there's no need to secondary just to dry hop. if you're harvesting the yeast it makes for an easier wash, but otherwise I'd just dry hop in the primary, there's no difference.

why would u rack so early? you run more risk than any possible benefit

the brew has been at 1.022 for 3 days now so I'm going to put her into a glass carboy because i want to start another brew in my 6.5 gallon bucket.
