This started as an irish red, but I think it may be a bit dark and have too much caramel, roast, and bitterness. What do you think this will taste like? Will I get a coffee flavor with 4 oz of Black Roasted Barley? Will it be noticeabley red or way too dark?

5.5 Gallon

10# 2row
1# Carapils
1# Crystal 80
4oz Black Roasted Barley

35 IBU

Perle Bittering Hops
1/2 oz Willamette 20 min
1/2 oz Willamette 0 min

Wyeast Irish Ale

Looks to me like it's gonna be on the dark side with the black roasted barley plus a pound of Crystal 80.. Definite roasted flavor will be present, but probably not "coffee" like.. It looks like it will be tasty, balanced brew!

2 lbs of crystal (carapils is effectively just a very light colored crystal malt) might be too much. I personally never use more than 8oz of carapils in a beer.

4oz of roasted barley will impart a fairly dark color, especially in combination with a pound of 80L crystal. Is it "way too dark"? I don't know... it depends on what you are shooting for.

If I were to change it, I would throw in a half ounce or so of bittering hops at 60 mins. and drop the crystal 80 to 1/2 pound. The Irish Ale yeast I think will leave a little more residual sweetness than other english ale yeasts.
