I bought a kegerator last night off of craigslist and the guy gave me a 1/4 barrel keg that he had in it. Can I use this to keg homebrew? I have corny kegs already and am familiar, but I'm not sure if I can use this for my homebrew, or if I'll just keep it to trade in for a deposit. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
 
They make cool planters if you cut the top off of. Not sure who would return someone else's deposit to you.
 
Oh, not sure about that. Might work if you know the bar owner or something but normally they want paper work for that stuff. Not sure how it is near you. Hopefully it works our for you, but if not I bet a tomato plant would look pretty cool in it.
 
Pull out the stem and ferment in it (with one of those plastic carboy caps - orange around here).
If you were closer, I'd buy it from you.

YESSIR......perfect, and sanitary 5 gallon fermenter........use 2 1/4s for fermentation..........have 5 halfs to use for 10 gallon batches.....they work great!!

Please explain how this is built. I'd be interested in looking into this.
 
I've been looking at using a 1/4 bbl keg for fermenting as well. From the research I've done it seems like there's a few different ways you can set it up.

You will need to remove the original valve, then you have the option of using an orange carboy cap (easiest and cheapest solution) which can usually be heated and stretched over the keg. If you want something a little fancier, you can get a conversion kit like this (with or without the thermowell):

Another option is to modify the top of the keg to accept a corny style lid (there is someone in Portland who routinely offers this service on Craigslist for about $30). I think this is the route I'm leaning toward since it would be able to closed up and capture some carbonation near the end of fermentation. The corny sized opening would also make cleaning or getting dry hops out a lot easier.
