lord have mercy...holy sheep sh@t.. bells two hearted is probably my all time favorite brew in america

Well, my "backyard" changes every 3-6 months but currently I am close to
Lost Coast
Redwood Curtain
Eel River
6 Rivers brewing
Mad River
Regeneration Ale (haven't tried this one yet)
The Local Beer Bar (great beer pub)

My list is no where near as great as some of these, especially Grand Rapids, but here goes.

15 mins
Southern Prohibition

60 mins north
Lucky Town

60 mins south
Crooked Letter

though I'm sure more are going to be popping up soon.

I googled (yes I know, could be really wrong  ) a couple of those grand rapids ones and one was 65 miles away from grand rapids. Is that really local for you?

Better not get someone from sheffield or nottingham here otherwise their post will take up a whole page. There are probably hundreds of breweries that are "local" then for them!

I suppose though you can drive much faster so cover more ground

horses for courses etc

edit: just seen you road network, holy **** those are some straight lines. The only straight roads we have were built in roman times

Columbia SC is just getting into the craft brew scene and the original was Conquest Brewing, followed by River Rat Brewery. The newest (I haven't tried yet) is Swamp Cabbage Brewing.

Another Oregonian here. Hop Valley, Ninkasi, Falling Sky, Steelhead, Oakshire, Agrarian, Viking Braggot, Claim 52.

We're pretty beer rich through here. And none of it is the same, which is awesome.

There aren't any in my neighborhood per se, which is probably a good thing for my wallet and liver. However, within a 30 minute drive I have:

Bad Tom (haven't actually been there yet)
50West
Listermann/Triple Digit
Rhinegeist

Mt. Carmel
Blank Slate (no taproom)
Braxton (coming soon)

I suppose I better get busy. Just checked what is within about 40 minutes away and appears a good list with many I haven't tried yet.

Spilker Ales (maker of "Hopluia") is about 35 minutes away.

Likely more if I whipped out a google search...

Lotsa big neighborhoods around here, I guess.
Should we set some sort of maximum distance to consider a brewery "local"?
I've got more than 50 within 20 minutes, but if I stretch it to a 45 minute drive I have probably 100. What does everyone consider close by?

"Local" is all relative. If you live in NYC, local is a 5-block radius. Any further than that and it's "upstate."

If you live in west Bumble****, Texas, local could mean anything within a 200-mile radius.

Let's be practical here and say local is anything less than 30 miles from your home.

We have several now. I'm really pleased with the growth around here!

Yellowhammer
Blue Pants
Straight to Ale
Below the Radar
Huntsville Brewery
Salty Nut

Same. Akron just had a new nano brewery open (Aqueduct Brewing) and another is in the works (R. Shea Brewing). Definitely exciting!

Theres a whole two that are worth going to on my area, Sequoia Brewing (2 locations) and House of Pendragon. I think technically there's a third called Tioga Sequoia Brewing but they are an agreement with Sequoia or something silly and I can't tell them apart.

Drake's and 21st amendment locally.

Would really love to tour lagunitas in petaluma sometime.

I toured Lagunitas in Petaluma and Chicago recently. Lots of fun at both but Petaluma was head and shoulders above Chicago regarding the expertise and professionalism of the hosts. I was on a beer tour bus which included lunch in Petaluma and had one of my best brewery experiences. Chicago seemed to be too goofy but the beer at both was great.

Just had a small brewery open up five miles from my house....

Fetching Lab Brewery

Got to check them out last week. Tried three solid beers. Will be fun to see how they grow.... and easy to get to!

I feel fortunate to live about 15 minutes from Hoppin' Frog and Thirsty Dog breweries in Akron. Haven't sampled all of their offerings yet...there are so many great beers to choose from! I have it on my to-do list to attempt a clone of Gangster Frog.

What is your local backyard brewery? Have you had any luck cloning any of their beers?

Not too far from Hoppin Frog and Thirsty Dog here in Strongsville! You're also very close to Lagerheads, Snowden. But the closest to me is the Brew Kettle next door and Fat Heads. Heck all of the other Cleveland breweries are with 30 minutes of me (Great Lakes, Platform, Market Garden, etc. just to name a few).

Kern River Brewing Company in Kernville, Ca. This place has an AMAZING line up from lager to porter and about 10 beers inbetween. Awesome fish tacos and fresh pretzels as well. I love this place and travel an hour routinely to get there. I HIGHLY recommend it.

There is a brand new brewery opening up about 6 miles from me called Nine Bands. The tap room opens up on Friday. Hopefully I can make it.

Damnation Alley Distillery is closer than any brewery. After that it's a toss up between a John Harvard Brew Pub, Idle Hands, Nightshift or Aeronaut Brewing Company, who I hadn't heard of until I checked Google Maps.

NoDa Brewing is closest - just a few miles from the house. Their beer is fantastic. Old Mecklenburg and Triple C are just a couple miles further than that. There's a bunch more within 10 miles of the house, but those three are the ones I hit most often.

Works out pretty well. Cheers.

The BrewERIE at Union Station.
Erie Ale Works
Erie Brewery
Lavery Brewery
These (4) are in town - less than 15 minutes from each other. :rockin:

Voodoo Brewery
North Coast
The Blue Canoe
Ellicottville Brewing
Southern Tier Brewing
Sprague Farm & Brew Works
Timbercreek Brewery (edited/added)
These (7)are within an easy hours travel. A couple are within a 1/2 hour. :D
