I bought a whole setup from a guy on CL and these came with it.

Its a 7x5" cotton bag.

Is it for hops or can i seep grains in it? Can I use these in place of muslin bags?
Thanks.

Looks like a BIAB (brew in a bag) grain sack for doing all grain or partial mash. Search the forums there's a ton if info in the brewing technique.

I would think it would be ok for hops or steeping grains depending in the tightness of the mesh.
I prefer to let my hops go free range and have a screen on the bottom of kettle to filter grains after mashing and hops when boiling.

It can be used for steeping as well. I have muslin grain bags,& the steeping one is shorter than the biab one.

That thing looks too small to be of use in the average brew. What kind of recipe is it? The bag looks very tightly woven as well. Not sure.

Compared to the bottle cap it's sitting next, I'd say it's slightly larger than a sandwich bag.

I brew in a bag, and that is definetely not a biab bag. Doesn't look like a steeping bag either. I would jut put it aside, and use it to hold loose bottle caps or something.

It is tightly woven, which is why i had a hard time believing it was for steeping. But Ive only done one practice batch with some of the left over ingredients from the bundle of stuff I got. There were about 40 of them which is why I ask

The recipe was a masterbrew ale.

Yeah 7x5, about a sandwich bag.

Prob something they used for pellet hops.

I know some brewers try to keep the hop gunk out of their fermenters. No real reason to in my opinion, but hey, people do what they do.

It looks pretty small for grain steeping - but that might be it too.

So he probably kept his hops in there while boiling? Maybe longer then if they were just tossed in?
