As in the title, I'm just curious.

Side question - Many kits I brewed in the past recommend to ferment at a stable temperature around 64,4 to 73,4 F.

I read somewhere else that it is actually better to ferment for longer periods at lower temperatures, for example between 53,6 to 57,2 F.

Is this true? ideas and opinions are welcome!

the lower the temperature, the slower the yeast work, but they do produce a cleaner beer. thats why lagers take so long but are so clean. ales are done fermenting faster because they ferment warmer than lagers. so yes fermenting at 60 as opposed to 70 will take a bit longer but it will be a cleaner beer and well worth the wait. Some ale yeasts will go dormant below 58 so i would aim for 60-65
 
That will depend on the yeast chosen. You should be able to find fermentation ranges for most yeasts online. Keep in mind that higher temperatures will eventually produce esters, etc...

The second part of your question is more geared towards lagers, so that will not always apply.
 
Depends on what yeast you are using.

Lager yeast will be colder than Ale yeast and then different strains from Lager and Ale yeast will require different temperatures ranges.

I have found that fermenting on the lower side of the temperature range takes a bit longer but you'll end up with a better product.
