just curious. i wanted to start whirlpooling as soom as possible just to knock a little time off of brew day and so i wouldnt have my vulnerable wort just chilling in the ice bath for so long.

immediately. Hot side aeration is a myth. An urban legend even! Commercial breweries worry about it less than many homebrewers.

I did an IPA yesterday and did a 15 min whirlpool adding the late hops in 4 additions before chilling. Steeping rather than boiling the hops preserves more of the aroma... Opening the ferm fridge this morning to check on my babies I about fell over from the hop aroma.

what is whirlpooling? and what do i need to do it?

the pros do it with large volume by recirculating through a side port at an angle that gets the wert spinning around (think flush of the toilet)

we can do it with the mash paddle pretty easily. It allows grain and hops in the boil kettle to settle in a nice center cone of the kettle so when you draw off the side it doesn't take all that with it.

Has anyone used a false bottom and center pickup tube and still whirlpooled? I've got a new keggle with full FB and center dip tube but I plan on adding a side port to whirlpool after knockout. Would the trub cone be pulled through the false bottom since the siphon is right under it?
