The way I see it, both recirculate wort during mash using heating element to maintain a constant temperature. Why would there be a limitation in brutus 20 due to sugar saturation but none in rims?

RIMS just talks about how heat is applied. The Brutus 20 is a RIMS yes, but the limitation is based on the fact that it is a no sparge system and not due to the fact that it heats via RIMS.

Thanks for your reply. How does a rims/herms do a sparge?

you just sparge like you normally would if you had niether after draining the MT... the rims or herms is not used during the actual sparge (or doesnt have to be) its used to recirculate /heat and maintain the mash during the mashing process... especially for those who dont use well insulated mash tuns or want to step mash... it also makes your wort clear going into the kettle.

This is where I'm lost. Let's say I have 4 gal of wort in MLT recirculating via heating coil in HLT maintaining at 151F. After 60 mins, while pumping those 4 gal of wort out of MLT to BK, I need to pump in 3 gal of hot water (170F) to MLT for fly sparge. Where do I heat those 3 gal of water? Do I use the same hot water in the HLT that is maintaining the mash temperature? If yes, those water should be hotter than 170F, does it matter?

In a brutus 20 system you start with all of your water between the two kettles and recirculate. This is how a brew easy works. A three vessel system with a hlt would hold the storage water. Brutus 20 is similar to biab.

Brutus 20 . mash tun on the left ...BK. on the right..bk has a heating element

Not how my system works..I start with the brew kettle at full volume .once it hits the mash temp. The mash tun has false bottom and two biabsWith say 20 lb...I will fill from the bottom.and mash in..the brew kettle is off

Agreed, I think of Brutus 20 as recirculating BIAB but instead of using one large kettle, two smaller kettles are used for the mash, then one kettle for boil.
That's correct..How big of vessel do I need for 10 gallon batches
