Converted my 1000ml graduated cylinder into a more compact form.

And then purchased another one.

Milled the grain for tomorrow's house Strong Ale batch; also did something I've been meaning to do for a while. Got a natural gas line installed back in July when we got our new furnace, and have been curious to see what our monthly usage has been; I brew almost every weekend. NO visible change at all in our monthly usage, so I just went from about $60/month (sometimes more) in propane exchanges to what is probably less than $3/month for fuel for brewing. Not to mention no longer stressing do I have enough propane to start the brewday. Our furnace, stove, and clothes dryer all run on NG so it's not easy to see any major changes in usage, but I know I'm saving some $$ not to mention stress. In for the NG win!

Sunday mornings usually wake to the smell of bacon, sausage and eggs…

I like the idea of malt and hops!
The smell of bacon and sausage is but a happy and sad memory for me, from past days of yore and care free youth , when I could liberally and with glee be a wonton glutton of fat and cholesterol. Alas, I am now , in my advancing years , into the Golden age of Twilight , beset on all sides and under constant threat from the ever vigilant Esteemed Mrs, my learned but I'm quite positive Quack physician and I dare say my very own heart and cardiovascular system , faced with the threat of great bodily harm upon my person with the possibility of a most untimely and swift exit from the World stage...Woe is Me !!!....In other words I can't have none 😒

Was watching a slow leak in my CO2 system, wasn’t sure where it was. Discovered that the two kegs I use for mineral water have a different PRV than the rest of my kegs, and that they were loose.

It wasn’t much, but it was something.
Slow leaks have been giving me the Willies for the past 6 weeks. Woke up Friday to an empty tank for the 3rd time in 6 weeks. Once again had to refill, take everything apart and reattached and tightened with care. 2 days later gauge is holding steady so keeping my fingers crossed. A bright note, the Air gas company felt sorry for my troubles and gave me a $5 discount.

Finished up brewday in good time, and just now set a big batch of spaghetti sauce to slow-cook in the instant pot. This is the one kitchen gadget that I'm absolutely in love with; I use it for pork ribs, beef stroganoff, rice, hard boiled eggs, and now I know I can use it for a slow cooker the possibilities this winter are endless. Also can use it to make crystal malt, since I have the 10qt I can probably get 4lbs in there at a time.

LHBS trip for malt and stuff. 8lbs of MO and 2 of 120l. London yeast From lallemand and magnum hops, because that's my workhorse hop for bittering. I don't like hoppy beers much so I haven't bought anything else in months. Gets the job done.

Came home from work today intending to tap the two I kegged yesterday (were cold-crashed for over a week so should have been ready). Dead Guy clone is waaaaay overcarbed (yes I should know better), and then the #2 co2 line on the manifold decided to dramatically fly off and spray Munich Helles all over the bottom of the kegerator. Got that fixed, and cleaned up, and tapped the Helles to discover a slightly quinine-ish bitterness to it on tasting. Yah, probably needs a week or two to settle but I needed it on tap NOW. Dead Guy is going through a systemic off-gassing tonight to get it down to non-6-inches-of-foam-in-the-glass drinkability. I repeat, YES I should know better, but my patience is on backorder right now since all I have otherwise is a very nice Marzen that I want to save some of for the holidays.

The jalapenos were really mild, sort of "green" tasting on the first pours all the way to the end. This being my third hot pepper IPA attempt. Should have done a taste test of the jalepenos before making the tincture to gauge the flavor and spiciness. Not all peppers are created equal. However, the beer did place 2nd in the IPA category at the County Fair, so at least the judge thought it was pretty good. Scored a 39/50 for my first ever competition (and using an extract kit).

My first attempt with a hot pepper IPA used habeneros which I thought was way better for spicey hot, but not overwhelmingly hot at all. And slight notes of tequila were there also. For me, it was just right. That was with 4 oz. of tequila and using 16 grams diced up fine - habeneros, seeds and all. Overall, the Kama Citra recipe is really a good one for making a hot pepper beer. Northern Brewer had recommended this kit when I inquired with them about what would be a good kit for habeneros. The tequila was my twist, instead of using "neutral" vodka for the tincture. Perfect combo it was.

My second attempt used 13 grams ghost peppers - finely sliced seeds and all, and 4 oz. tequilla, but it was overwhelmingly hot. So I'll permanently pass on ghost peppers. I find them to be super hot, with no flavor whatsoever, unlike habeneros or jalepenos.

I'll be making more hot pepper Kama Citra IPA again, but with habeneros, and next time it will be all-grain. Recommend you give your peppers a try with the Kama Citra!!

BTW, I'm dreaming up a recipe now for an all-grain chocolate milk oatmeal stout using habeneros and cocoa nibs. Can't wait to brew it and give it a taste test.
Awesome, so dumb question but would you Muslin bag the peppers and dump the 'juice' into fermenter or simply Dump it all in without muslin bag?

If making a tincture of the jalapeños in vodka, you simply add the tincture to the keg. tinctures, if you have made them in advance, allow you to really dial in the heat/flavor you want. prior to adding it to the keg, you can add a small amount in milliliters to a glass of the same beer. Once you get to a set flavor/heat, you can then just scale up the tincture from a glass to the 5gallon keg and then add that amount to the keg. Worked for me on a few occasions.

Shot over my offer for the latest FoTD and I sanitized the last empty line in my kegerator and tapped the newest beer, the All Together NEIPA I brewed via Zoom with a buddy of mine a couple of states over. It isn't amazing, and I definitely had better commercial versions of it but it is pretty damn good.

But since I brewed it..does that make it amazing? 🤔

Fixed this battery operated window candle that the tiny positive and negative wires came loose from. My 1st time EVER soldering anything...and what does this have to do with What I did for beer today ? you ask ?? Well the wife told me just toss it, we'll get a new one. Well these were $16 last year. I fixed it so now that's a $16 savings and $16 aught to be a very nice 6 pack of some very decent 🎄 beer!!! Yes, I'm quite proud and impressed with myself Thankee !!! $16 for a new candle ? Bah Humbug !! I'm thinking Bells Christmas Ale...maybe something European ??
