What I did for beer today

Technically what I did for mead. Picked up some blowoff tubing and some EC-1118 at AHS, then watched a bunch of videos including interviews with Michael Fairbrother and Curt Stock. I think I'm ready for my first mead this weekend.

Nice man good luck. Going with a traditional? Show? Melomel?

I brewed a 5 gallon All grain batch of IPA, same grain bill I always use, but with different hop combo's every time. This time I boiled for 90 mins, to see how different it is from a 60 min boil. Im hoping for a slightly darker color, and a more pronounced bitterness. I'll upload pic's later...

Placed a *HUGE* order at farmhouse brewing for my next four batches. Almost pulled the trigger on a faucet and all needed parts from the faucet to the keg, but I need money for valentine's day. Good things come to those who wait. Either way, the 2014 pipeline will soon start.

Rescued my lager and a small batch of cider which had started to freeze in the lagering fridge. Sheesh.

Then I worked through the Bru'n Water calculations for the patersbier that I will hopefully brew next weekend.

I had 2/3's of the bottle tree loaded with dried bottles,so I sat down to put them away in my 12 pack/case boxes. Then I thought,"Hey! I got more bottles than I've ever been able to use,so I decided to weed out the Sam Adams bottles". Weeded out 8/12 pack boxes worth,leaving the plain craft bottles & German ones. Along with a smattering of Michelobe bottles made to look like the old fused-neck style. I got two big boxes of cleaned,yet to be de-labeled craft bottles to add. so I have 4 cases worth of SA bottles for whoever wants them. Drinking some Columbus Brewing Co IPA atm.

I now have over 200 bottles in my closet...
Oh and I'm brewing a helles tomorrow.

Just took a gravity reading on the black IPA. No change in a week, which is not good. Apparent attenuation is stopped at 69.5%, and it should be 72-76%. We've got to start using yeast starters regularly.

Built a shelf out of scrap i had laying around. Makes a big difference.

Went to the local LHBS and picked up the grain bill for a brown ale I am about to brew. Also started a batch of Apfelwein today.

Nice job on the shelf finsfan. Organization is key when you start collecting more and more home brewing equipment.

I finished up my DIY thermowell, water testing for leaks overnight, got the motor hooked up to the grain mill, roasted some malt for my pumpkin ale, and testing out the motorized mill tomorrow.

Oh, and yesterday I placed an order at farmhouse brewing for the next four batches. I might have mentioned that already yesterday. Meh.

Went to Lowes and found the correct size rubber grommet for my thermowell, got another food grade bucket and lid, junction box for the wires hanging precariously from the motor to my mill, and acid brushes for flux for more stainless soldering. Then spent a little time with Bru N Water building water profiles for the next couple batches.

Finally organized my trading packing materials. Before, the closet was just filled with boxes and random packing medium. Now its all organized by type and I can walk through the closet again.

Put away bottles I cleaned yesterday, soaked another bucket of empties and pulled a sample of my BDSA.

Drank one, then used the can to help give one case and a couple bombers of my Imperial Stout the royal wax treatment.

Loaded the dishwasher with bottles to wash and sanitize. Waited a couple hours. Got all my bottling gear out and sanitized. Boiled up the priming sugar. Waited on the dishwasher. Washed and sanitized my 2.5 gal keg. Waited on the dishwasher. Drank a couple beers. Waited on the dishwasher. Watched an episode of this crazy tree house show (he builds a homebrew tree house for a family in Ohio). Finally, after 4 hours, checked the dishwasher. I forgot to press the start button. I guess I'll be bottling tomorrow.

Took a gravity reading on my altered NB SMaSH. Came to 1.016, same as yesterday. Then, I added some dry hops.

1 oz. Simcoe
1 oz. Calypso
1.5 oz. Legacy

That's a total of 8.5 oz. of hops in the mash, boil, hop stand, and dry hop.

Biggest hop bomb I've ever brewed.

Decided that the starter of WLP830 wasn't crashed well enough to pitch when the wort was cooled, so I am finally going to do what I should have done for lagers for a long time: letting the wort cool on its own down to 45, then I will pitch the yeast and let it free rise up to 50.

We finished brewing our first batch at 3am, one of us had to be at work at 6am. Did not mind it one bit. Stoked!

Maybe a dumb question, but I have never wax sealed any bottles, but it is a messy process? I am guessing you just do a double boiler to melt the wax, then dip the bottle tops in.

This was my first attempt at wax sealing bottles. It was not as messy as i thought it might be. I purchased one large candle for $2 bucks at my local corner grocery store and a pack of hot glue sticks from a craft store. As my boil vessel i actually used a 16oz tallboy can of beer with the top cut off. Be careful as you heat your wax/glue mixture as it may pop when getting heated by the flame. Stir frequently and when the consistency is good dip your bottle, give it a quick spin and move it upright quickly if you want a long drip tail of wax down the bottle. I placed my finished bottles on top
Of some Newspaper i lined my counter with. I only used half of the candle. There are a couple threads on here that illustrate what I am describing here. It was fun and i am looking forward to doing it again.

Took the first gravity reading of a smoked porter and it is .002 below target FG. The sample is still sweet enough that I think it will drop more. Only 4 days into fermentation. Will pick up a second carboy tomorrow so I can split the batch and add chipotle to one of them. Putting some peppers into vodka today.
