I have been reading several older threads on grain scales to try to find a reliable scale. Many of the threads are several years old and the most recent was over two years old. When I Googled the many scales used, I found conflicting statements regarding reliability.

By now, I would think there is a grain scale manufacturer that is considered a standard and the go to scale for weighing grains. What scale do you recommend that is reliable in its readings, solidly constructed and easy to read?

I am also researching for a second scale that will giving readings to .01g for use in adding hops and for measuring the various ingredients for treating the water depending upon the brew. I just received Ward Lab's test kit. What scale would you recommend for this task?

I would rather pay once for great scales that are accurate and will last rather than buying a cheaper scale just to discover it breaks easily, isn't accurate and doesn't last.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

I've used this one for years. I really like the detachable readout. I just bought a second one for my wife.

I researched them and ended up with the Ultraship. It has been perfect, and very reliable. I like the detachable panel and the ease of setting units. Nothing bad to say about it.

Mine is the Ultraship 35.

I've got the Ultraship. It's a great scale, but the off button on mine has failed. It turns on but the button won't turn it off. I now need to unplug the chord to shut it down.

Thanks for all the replays and suggestions! I like the 10 year warranty on some of the American Weigh scales. After looking at @dough293cz smaller scale recommendation, I see the company offers a 200g x .01 version.

When it comes to the large scales suggestions, it appears all of their platforms (except the eBay one) are either 8"x6" or 8"x 8". Since I will be using a bucket with a 10" diameter bottom to rest on the platform, would that cause problems?

Would scale that had a larger platform like this be better? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0153I0418/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Obviously, I do not need for it to go as high as 440lbs.

You can always put a piece of plywood or similar on the platform to support a bucket. One thing I like about my ultraship 55 is that the front panel can be disconnected from the scale so that large objects can be weighed. So you can add a piece of whatever to form a larger platform and just TARE it out on the readout.

Here's what that looks like: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FSWB9K/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

What are you expecting to do with it? I have a wide plastic bowl I place on mine to weigh grain. Works great. But I can also weigh smaller amounts too.

You have a number of recommendations from a lot of people who have endorsed what they have. Pull the trigger on one of them. I think you're overthinking this.

An 8" x 8" platform has a diagonal of 11.2", so you can set a 10" diameter rimmed container on it just fine. A 6" x 8" platform only has a 10" diagonal, so not so good.

Brew on :mug:

@doug293cz, duh! <smacking forehead>. Thank you for reminding me a2+b2=c2. <shaking head> I just don't know what I was thinking.....

@mongoose33, great suggestion regarding expanding the platform if needed. Yes, I need to place an order.

Again, thank you to everyone who posted their experiences!
