I am making a summer ale that calls for grains of paradise. In the recipe, it is measured in grams. What would be a general idea of how much to add if I needed 4 grams? (1/4 teaspoon, 1/2? Ect.)

First there's tons of conversion calculators; online, apps, etc.

Secondly how small of a batch is this? 4 grams isn't likely to make much of a difference unless it's like a 1 gallon batch.

1 oz is about 28 grams. So you're looking at about 1/7 (or .14) of an ounce! My bittering hops in my 9 liter (2.3 gallons) batches weigh out to be more than that!

Grams to Teaspoons doesn't convert.

The best bet is to wait for someone here who has paradise and a blade scale, measure your 4 grams, and then figure out how many teaspoon scoops it took. Good luck!

Also,

If you have the original untouched package, and it says something like "1 oz" for example, you can convert that to 28grams, and cut it into 7 equal sections (like that famous powdery drug) and boom you have apx 4 grams of paradise.

Yea I know t doesn't convert, that's why I posted so I could see if someone has the number already lol

Was gonna try for you but the grains package I've got is only 2g. Its still sealed shut wild guess maybe its half teaspoon.

Well. The recipe is a 5g batch. I have the grains but it's bulk. So it's a few OZs.

And if you have 2grams. I can just see what you have and double or increase as needed. That's what I'm looking for through. What does your 2 grams fill as far as measuring spoons lol.

And I'm going to assume crushed or cracked. I wouldn't think you wouldn't get much from whole

I went ahead and opened package 2g is just a few grains short of a level 1/2 teaspoon

hahahaha, i just looked up grains of paradise... completely not what i thought. i was thinking some kind of specialty grain and wondering how 4 grams was going to make any difference whatsoever...

i would just google search for "how much grains of paradise in homebrew."

I have done the evaluation. I bought a 6 ozs pack of GoP, and had to do the same.

I have written on the side of my container that 1 level teaspoon = 0.1 oz, or 2.8 grams. This is uncrushed.

4 grams will most certainly make a difference in a 5 gallon batch. Grains of paradise are potent that's why most packages only sell in 2 gram increments. 4 grams will have a very noticeable spicy character.

somebody didn't read the entire thread...

Haha perfect. Seems like I got a lot of good info that has all been consistent so I'm confident that I added the proper amount. I did the brew last night. Smelled amazing.

I always weigh my additions and add them as grams or ounces to be sure. I've found that the size of the crush and the moisture content aren't represented in teaspoon type volume measurements.

The differences are easily seen when adding gypsum and calcium chloride to brewing water to make adjustments. The finer powdery consistency of gypsum will pack tighter in a teaspoon than the round bulkier calcium chloride will.

Yea I understand: what I ended up doing was finding someone with a 2 gram packaging of the Grains of Paradise, and just filled the measuring spoons to find what the 2 grams would fill. I know it's not going to fill the measuring spoons perfectly but it gave me a close enough comparison to feel confident about how much I needed.
