What the ****** I am in the wrong business its $599 for just the mold!

You might be! Worth a try i mean. The basic mold i wanted was 149. Figured it was worth it for ease of creation. Their plan is good imo regardless of how you build top. I busted their chops about price come to think of it. They stood by big box to ship, lots of styrofoam, etc..

@staestc matches the kitchen nicely. What about other side? I thought that was the side you were going with. When i saw you flipped it i admired the thinking.

I am killing it at the office with snackmaster. Sandwiches and breakfast. My boss came in and i was like hay. He was like aaa.

Thanks, but I saw it done this way somewhere on the net. No original thinking :)

I looked at these guys web site. The castable dome they have now is pretty cool (albeit expensive!). I'm still going with a fire brick dome though. I have to justify the brick saw I purchased! :)

It's cool but just a tad weaker than I wanted. Maybe should rout it a little deeper or use slightly bigger (thicker) magnets. I'll try it for a bit then decide.

Looks great!

20/20 hindsite alert: Magnetic fields drop off very quickly with distance, so you want to minimize the distance between knives and magnets. I'd route that channel all the way through, then glue a piece of red oak veneer over the face to cover the channel.

You can get 1/42" veneer at lowes or amazon. 2" and 4" width, 8' long, in a roll. I'd think it would take the stain//oil/polyurathane just fine. insert the magnets and backfill channel with polyurathane to make it strong.

Whats wrong with a few knives falling off the bar? :D

Falling knives scare me. I had a job as a produce clerk a million years ago. The boss told me to never try to catch a falling knife, but guess what I did while trimming iceberg lettuce? Thought I cut my hand off.

I'll tell you this: I learned my lesson, and it stuck, and to this day I instinctively just step back and let it fall.

Yup. Ive had a few knives fall. Let them drop, rinse, a start cutting again.

I need to rig up an under-cabinet storage system or something. We have a knife block, but it's not enough for all of our "good" knives, and I'd like to have a separate place for them, or at even get rid of the block off the counter altogether.

One problem is we have low ceilings, so there isn't the standard space between countertop and cabinets. A hanging block might still be big enough to be in the way. I might consider putting a magnet strip on the wall, but I have a feeling it will get covered by something in the way before too long.

Travis, love your kitchen helper troll! LOL!\

Andrew - waaaaaaay back in time when I was an apprentice butcher, they taught me the same thing, and also, if using the bandsaw to break down any cuts with a bone, if the bandsaw caught the meat and jerked it out of hand do NOT grab for it! Valuable lessons. I came away with all fingers intact from that job!

There's not much worse than a falling knife, especially a very sharp one.

Funny thing, they always say never to try and catch a gun if you drop it; easy to see why if you shoot a Glock.

My neighbor was also a butcher way back and I can tell you that he can sharpen a knife like nobody I've ever seen with just a steel and strap. Every time he hands mine back he says "any sharper and you'll hurt yourself" and he's probably right!

Lol. Thank you. I have a shop helper troll too. To remind me not to look like him! Dog got it years ago and I keep him in the shop. Lol

Thanks, but I have stacks and rolls of veneers. I was going for the piece of lumber that knives just magically stick to look. I routed to close to 1/16 thick on the front, but never actually measured it. They are not in danger of falling off, I just would like a little more stick. I could have gone a little deeper with the router but did not. Still might later if I need to, but have not really used it yet so will see. It's easy to get the magnets out and rerout it. Way harder to put the magnets back in! Lol

I forgot to add that I believe the force varies by the cube root of the distance! Lol. Or cube of the distance. You know what I mean.

Please share your pirogies method! My first try did not come out like I wanted. Yours look excellent!

Thanks, I must confess , I didn't make these ( though I have in the past ) but, I did the caramelized onions and just moved the onions to the edge of the pan and fried the dumplings in butter and olive oil on medium heat.

Was in the mood for burgers tonight but I was too lazy to go get buns. So I used the sourdough I had on hand to make "patty melts". I use the quotes cuz they were patty melt-esque since I added the fried egg on top. Also added grilled onions.

They look great!

Lamb chops again, poor me ;) pirogies with caramelized onions and fresh tomato cucumber salad.

Very nice! I love homemade perogies! Of course I polish on my mothers side. Cabbage ones are my favorite. I had some cabbage and mushroom ones last week with some Black Forest Kielbasa. Both came from a Polish market in NJ.

Bummer, I thought you were going to cure all of my pierogi problems!

Okay, okay! @Oldskewl sorry I didn't make these, (it's been a very long time since I have) but I did just find a good recipie online for them and poppyseed roll. Polish family on my husband's side so they're coming for a short visit and I'm going to make some goodies, might not be as good as his grandma's but even the frozen pirogies are appriciated when served with onions right?

So I'll post again when I test the recipies.
