Having a HB oatmeal stout. Our 1" of overnight snow melted today, but still blustery outside. I'll stay inside with a couple homebrews, thankyouverymuch.

So following last night’s journey to Southwest and Mexican Lagers, I get a bunch of grief from the Peanut Gallery, namely Beer-Loving Daughter # 1 and Beer-Loving Daughter #3. Seems that the old Beermeister32 left out one key element in enjoying Mexican brews – “No lime?”

Seems my daughters are now beer experts. Amateurs, they thought they’d catch me. Today’s redux is a Modelo Especial with limes. So next time you ask, ask me the right way, kids… ¿sin lima? Ha!

Modelo has been brewing this since 1925, advertised as a Pilsner-Style lager with a clean finish. Any time I hear the word “Style” in a description, my ears stick straight up – It usually means “styled like” whatever they are describing. If it is a Pilsner, I say call it a Pilsner. If it is a Pilsner “type” brew, then I suppose the “Style word” describes it adequately. No worse than the typical American adjunct lagers loaded up with corn and rice products to raise the ABV, lower the flavor and drop production costs. I can’t tell, here, there is no list of ingredients.

It’s a straight up BMC-type lager in my book, always great getting the limey fruity thing going on with Mexican beers. Tonight I’m enjoying a few spicy Chicharrones, but just a few, trying to cut back on the salt, but these are sooo good!

Well it has started snowing and looking at the bleak, dreary, cold weather made me wish for something warm, cosy and slightly stronger.
Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel seemed to fit that bill very nicely.

I just brewed 5 strong beers in a row for coming winter. 2 different old ales, imperial stout being aged on oak, wee heavy being aged on oak/homage to Backwoods Bastard, and my annual barleywine. I have one more in the works before the end of the year - another imperial stout with chocolate/homage to Foothills Sexual Chocolate
 
We got my favorite kind of snow today, the kind that doesn't stick. Good excuse to make soup.

A glass of classic NW-style IPA while I prep my water for tomorrow's brew day--a Vienna. All of your gorgeous Vienna posts have had my tongue wagging, so I thought I'd hop on that train, too. Can't wait!

If a glass holds a hefty amount of beer and I can drink out of it without spilling on myself, thats the sign of a good glass. Little else matters 😜.
 
What better way to wrap up the Friday work week than with a heavyweight – a hefty and delicious 8.7% ABV Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA from Stone Brewing!

Since we’ve been talking Mexican beers this week, Stone is right next door in the San Diego area right? Well, close by proximity but miles apart in brewing styles. I know Stone has a Mexican-style brew, Cerveza Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager. “This ain’t that..!” The bulk of their production is tasty Ales and IPA’s, and this Black IPA is indeed a treat!

Last chapter on Black IPAs I mentioned something about these being re-named or re-classified as Cascadian Dark Ales, - makes more sense me thinketh, especially considering the grammatical error of calling something a “Black India Pale Ale”. I guess they must think we’re all a bunch of stupid drunk dullards. Wish this thing would get straightened out. Maybe we are!

I love breakfast for dinner.
And a lot easier to clean up.

When I was a kid, when my Mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday dinner I often asked for breakfast for dinner. She always would ask me, "Are you sure that's what you want?" I thought I was being nice because it was really simple and the whole family seemed to enjoy it and she just wanted to be certain that I didn't want something more fancy.

It wasn't until I was much older and started cooking for myself that I realized what a PITA the Great American Death Breakfast is to make and then clean up. I've always felt kinda guilty about that ever since--especially doing it to her on a week night. What a jerk move!

Sometimes when my wife and I can't decide what we want for dinner, we drag out the electric griddle and make bacon, eggs and pancakes. And a big glass of orange juice. Yeah, it's a mess to clean up, but don't care.

If you ever find it necessary to have me sit quietly in one spot for two-three hours, hand me a box of those and an air fryer. Mix in a box of Q-tips and I'm basically trapped.
 
Drinking a HB Session Black IPA that I kegged/bottled last month. Used the yeast cake for an American Strong Ale that I bottled earlier this week. The Black IPA was:
  • 4.0 kg Pale Ale Maris Otter
  • 0.3 kg Carafa Special Type 3
  • 0.1 kg Special W
  • 50 g Vic Secret Hops (added at 30 and 5 minutes)
  • 50 g Sultana Hops (added at 30 and 5 minutes)
  • US-05 yeast
Packaged around 23 litres of 3.9% ABV at around 70 IBU
