Alcohol and water have different reletive densities, so measuring much alcohol is in a bottle of beer by weight will give a slightly different percentage (lower) than measuring by volume. Either way will tell you how much alcohol is in the beer, but most people have a better grasp of alcohol by volume. If someone says their beer is 7 percent alcohol, they mean by volume.
