Anyone else think that it's weird that a HBS called Weekend Brewer is closed on Sundays? Shouldn't it be called Monday through Saturday Brewer or Half a Weekend Brewer?
My plan was to head down there Sunday while SWMBO was at work but now I have to convice her to take a 35 minute ride to Ches-Vegas so I can brew "another" beer.

Every Home Brew Store I've ever dealt with has been closed on Sunday. I think I would come up with a different name than Weekend Brewer.

Really? That's kind of sad. My LHBS is open 12-4 on Sunday, and more often than not that's when I manage to find time to get over there.

Mine is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That's what I'd call the "Weekend Brewer". I usually hit it Thursday or Friday during lunch the weekend before I brew.

Mine is open till 3 on Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday. Makes sense to me.

The closest one to me is also closed Monday/Tuesday. There is another over in Fort Worth, but they are more expensive. A dollar more for 3 pound bags of DME and kits, etc. Their books are more expensive, too....

i think mine is closed on sunday and monday, but im not sure...im buying everything on-line now any way so it doesnt matter anymore.

Maybe its called 'weekend brewer' cuz thats when the owner is brewing, thats why he/she is closed?

or maybe your supposed to buy everything during the week and then brew all weekend.

i know those are both weak excuses...im more pissed that 'chick filet' is closed on sudays!

Don't get me started on Chik-fil-A, that stuff is like crack and yes, it sucks that they are closed on Sundays. That is also the reason I refuse to set foot in Ukrop's as well as the fact that they refuse to sell beer.
I would think a HBS would want to be open both days of the weekend because that is when their customers need to buy stuff, especially when you are brewing on a Sunday and realize that you're missing something.

Everything online? Even grain? May be I'm old fashioned but I prefer buy grains in my LHBS. And again, last time I brewed - I had a day off (it was not Sunday though), the idea came by 10:30 to try this Kolsch from Beer Captured. 12:30 I was warming up the water... Go do it online.

So I took a trip to the Weekend Brewer yesterday. I used to live down the street in Chester and drove by it almost every day and of course now I wait until I live 35 minutes away to make my first trip. Anyway.....I talked to Bob who was a really nice guy and helped get all my ingredients together. The place wasn't as big as I expected although this was my first time in a HBS so I'm not sure why I thought that.

Mine is open on Sat. but I prefer to go during the week. It is run by a husband and wife with the wife running the show during the week. I always bring my little girl and the wife of the shop will always make sure to hook up my daughter with a couple suckers, she even gave her one of those talking Homer bottle openers. To top it off they have a basket full of toys and coloring books I can't pull my girl away from.

yeah thier food taste alot better then those pics look!

i always get the grilled chicken sandwhich with waffle fries that they cook in peanut oil...Its still fast-food, but its better than booger-king, or crapdonalds...

A lot of these LHBS's are run by one or two people-often a husband-wife team. They gotta have a weekend, too. Cut 'em some slack and go when they're open. There's one near me that is run by a couple of big Packer fans, so there's no way in hell they're open on Sunday. They take Sunday & Monday off and are back at it on Tues. Fine with me.:)

Good point. I bet it is tough for them to turn a profit as well.
It just seems like every time I am brewing they are closed. It would be nice to have them to fall back on if I forgot or brake something.

They're in Chester, VA.

I realize everyone needs a day off but c'mon, you should be open when your customers need you to be open and most of your customers need stuff on the weekend. Why not be closed Mon/Tues?

Sure, but then they shouldn't name the place "Weekend Brewer". ;)

I've only been able to do one batch so far, but I've been to my LHBS two or three times, at least one of which was a Sunday. I'm more inconvenienced by the hours on weekdays than on weekends. Why close so early?

Admit it: You had envisioned it as a magical palace with beer waterfalls, bags of hops and grain to the ceiling, copper kettles, and hot chicks everywhere didn't you. :D

yeah, I was expecting one of those old Coors Light commercials where the dude opens a briefcase and out pops a pool, drinks, and chicks in bikinis. :D

This happened to me once. 2am, coming home from a party, swung through the all-night drive-thru at BK and ordered a couple of cheeseburgers.

"I'm sorry, sir. We are out of beef tonight."

"You're kidding, right?"

"I'm afraid not, sir. Would you like chicken or fish?"

"No, not really. Beef was the reason I came to BURGER King."

"I understand, sir. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Bob is a really nice guy. He helped me pick my homebrew kit and gave me a ton of advice, including telling me about this forum.
Hurricane Floyd, have you ever gone to the homebrew meetings up at Legends? Bob told me about that. I haven't gone, but with only batch under my belt, I don't consider myself a real homebrewer yet.

I have not been to the meetingd at Legend. I just registered today at jrhomebrewers.org so maybe I will look into that after getting to know some of the local guys from that site.

I've been up there too. I was just getting into brewing but I thought the prices were kind of high. Plus it is an hour +30 drive for me. If I need ingredients fast, I'll stick with HB USA.

Bob is a nice guy and patient too. I must have pestered the heck out of him and his wife while brewing my first batch and he just laughs it off. With Dupont and Phillip Morris being some of the larger employers this end of town there are alot of people on shift work and able to shop during the week. Not making excuses but it may be a reason.

Hurrican Floyd,

I share your sentiment on shopping at Ukrop's, I avoid them like the plague. I can't understand how shopping at a particular grocery store can make someone feel superior (in reference to the rude patrons you find there).
