Wasp wort chiller

So I'm looking into buying a wort chiller and came across this chiller it's called a wasp immersion chiller. Has anybody heard of it or have one? Is it good or just go with a circular wort chiller?

Seems your options would be limited with that shape and style of chiller. I'd pick up some copper tubing and do it yourself. Super easy and cheap. I made one for my first 5G batch and couldn't be happier with the results.

For the price it might be worth a try. With a circular chiller stirring the wort is just as affective in distributing the colder wort around. I doubt that it is that much more affective than a circular one though.

I have looked into copper tubing and this point have not found it cheaper then just buying one.

Copper isn't the cheapest material these days but if you can swing it it might be worth while to make a counter flow chiller which wouldn't be too much more and is twice as affective. I jut built one with instructions found in this forum and it worked great. Just a thought.

I have thought about doing that. The only thing that makes me not want to do that is the clean up time.

Dang! That place is the extreme wort chiller imporium of the interwebz.

As intriguing as the wasp is, I'm more interested in the HYDRA. Chill 5 gallons of wort in 3 minutes with an immersion chiller! That's quite a boast.

I agree the hydra is pretty impressive. But I was thinking cost.

its 10" from corner to corner, should fit in pretty much any brewpot

price is right on par for most cheaper wort chillers

the downside I see, which may not be much issue, is that you must use vinyl and hose clamps to attach it to a hose faucet - perhaps see if they could weld on the hose fittings

I just bought one for $30 off Craigslist. The guy used it 3 times and loved it. The only reason he sold it is because his SWMBO bought him the Hydro & he is upgrading to 10 gal batches. I'm looking forward to using it.

I use the Wasp & like it so far. The hose fittings do leak every so often, so i keep a screwdriver handy-no big deal. I'm not so sure it cools any faster than a circular one, but i suppose it does cover more area. I think it is good for the cost.

It is pretty cheap to build your own. I built one out of a 3/8in 50ft coil. The coil at the Lowes by me is $45. For hardware you only need some vinyl tubing from there in bulk at $3, a couple stainless hose clamps ($0.92 per pack), and a $6 hose adapter. If you want to make it a tad stronger grab 6 ft of UN-insulated heavy gauge copper wire from the bulk wiring area for a few bucks and weave it between the coils. For $5 more you can use 1/2 inch tubing. It takes 5-15 minutes to make and you cannot purchase a 50ft chiller for less. With my ultra cold well water in cold weather I can chill a 5.5 gallon batch to 70 degrees from boil in as little as 7 minutes.

I've used mine on 3 batches so far and love it. Going to do a comparison chill next weekend at a group brew day.
