I have a question regarding when washed yeas might be bad, I.e., signs to look for. I recently washed WLP007 strand of yeast from the primary. After it was rinsed several times down to a small mason jar, I the made a starter to build up the yeast count. The problem/question I have now is that after one day of being in the fridge, the yeast has some black tints in it.

If you look at the pictures, can anyone see any signs of something to be concerned about?

The other strand of WLP001 I did two weeks ago however came out awesome and I am going to build a starter and IPA. This jar is all whites and the yeastView attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1441432290.472031.jpgView attachment ImageUploadedByHome Brew1441432290.472031.jpgl still appears to be viable.

WLP007 is SUPER highly flocculant. It is hard to wash that strain. What I have done with success is decant that top fluid, pour the yeast into your fermenter slowly, and when you begin to see the black bits (trub) start to move to the mouth of the jar, simply stop and begin with another Jar.

A better process with this strain MIGHT be pinch off a bit of your initial 1st generation starter to begin the creation of a starter for later and step it up as you get close to brew day.
