I am loving homebrewing so far, and I haven't even finished my first batch lol did any of you go brew crazy when you first started? So far I have an amber ale kit going and a spiced ale recipe that I made based off of the flavors of wassail, and then a chocolate/cinnamon oatmeal milk stout that I found a recipe for and tweaked.

I can hear the fermentation going on in the next room and I'm starting to get a little impatient for the first brew XD I'll be bottling the amber ale next thursday, after 3 weeks of fermenting.

anyways, not really an advice post or anything, just thought I'd see if anyone else went brew crazy when they first started XP

As a matter of fact I did exactly that. And it was really cool.

I think that whenever someone first starts brewing they want to make every beer they see and will want to invent recipes no one else has ever heard of. Some will be good -- some not so much. All I can say is, "Have fun and enjoy the ride."

I would suggest you get a copy of "Brewing the Classic Styles" and make a few recipes from there that sound good to you. Your brewing skills will improve with practice and persistence.

I am about 3 years and about 70 brews deep into this game and i'm just going more brew crazy everyday..this sickness just gets worse - or should i say better:) Are you doing All grain or Malt extract ?

XD that's pretty accurate lol I've always been big into cooking and fairly skilled at knowing what flavors go together, so hopefully that translates over to brewing well lol and I will definitely check that book out thanks!

I have a feeling that's how I'm gonna be XD and at the moment I've only been doing extract's, though I'm debating spending the money and getting everything I need to start doing All Grain. Problem with that is I'll be leaving to travel the world within the next 6 months lol so I won't be able to bring all of that with me. Though I have been thinking about doing a brewing series as I travel the world using local ingredients. In which case it might be useful to have some experience in all grain brewing.

Absolutely went crazy! 3 months into 5 gallon extract batches, I've already bottled 3 batches and have two more fermenting as we speak. I have a list I created of styles I want to try that far exceeds my brewing and drinking capacity and now I'm working on getting/building an all grain setup.

To me, the projects and the process are part of the fun of this hobby and I'm always learning something new. I used to get super anxious during each brew, checking on it constantly and worrying over every little detail, but having a pipeline has dramtically helped.

Congrats on the first brew and welcome to a heck of a fun hobby. :)
 
The impatience will subside soon after you sample your first efforts. At first you'll be thrilled that you simply made beer. (You made BEER!) That's exciting! But the honeymoon will pass and you will notice its flaws. You'll want it to be much better, and the answer won't be to brew more wacky things, only to accumulate many gallons of mediocre beer. So you'll slow down, read, learn, start tweaking one variable at a time... And eventually it will be a deeper satisfaction than the initial WOW that you're feeling right now. And your beer will actually taste really good!

Or not. :drunk: But that's my story anyway...
 
Old guy here, what's XD mean?

Ya, 30 years brewing and I still get crazy waiting on beers. The key is to brew lots, often. Then you can have some conditioning. Even more important when bottling.

yea i would imagine 2 35 litre boil pots would be a laugh checking in at the airport. Just use your travels to drink and study the great beers of the world - if you get a chance in Germany drink "Augustiner Brau munich Helles' - i would guzzle that everyday if i could. Dam now i'm thirsty...

Haha I'm an over achiever, I've already been doing a ton of reading and research before brewing. Mostly because I know that after the very very initial excitement of drinking my first homebrew, I'm going to start tasting it and taking it apart to improve it lol I've already done 3 brew days, bottling my first soon and made my own extract recipe from scratch which my LHBS owners actually couldn't recommend any changes on, so I have high hopes for that one as long as I didn't mess anything up during the brew :p

Haha definitely, Though I'll be traveling for at least the next 5 years, so I'll be in most places for a minimum of 6 months and will be taking a freighter cruise in between south America and south Africa, so I can probably manage brewing equipment for 2 years or so traveling.

I will definitely look at for that beer in Germany! Any specific region of Germany? Also any other beers around the world to try? I plan on having a little dirt from every country on my boots.

Augustiner Brau is a Munich beer (as are most) but can be found in most Supermarkets, and corner stores, and train stations and side of road stalls (i love germany!).
I went to Pils in Czech rebublic and went to the pilsner urquell factory - worth checking out...thats a great beer - as is Bud va.

Ok awesome! Germany sounds fantastic haha and I plan on spending at least 6 months in the Czech republic, so I will definitely make a point to go by the pilsner urquell factory. That probably won't be until 2017-2018 though.
