very old keg, still good?

Hey guys and gals. My parents are cleaning out their garage and found an old keg of mine, I'm sure from some high school party a dozen years ago (didn't get the deposit back on that one!!). Anyway, is that thing still good for anything? I'm sure its filled with mold. They asked all the scrap metal yards in town and none of them will even take it!

I was thinking I could cut it down for an open fermentation vessel down the road, or just toss it but I don't know if its still good for anything.

im sure the stainless is beyond it shelf life by now.

seriously though , its fine I had one that sat for 14 years before I converted it to my first HLT.... my 10 gallon ball lock kegs I use are from the 50-60s era... dirt and mold clean easily from stainless steel.

Yep, it would be fine to repurpose it regardless of how long its been sitting around. If you decide to build something with it, give it serious thought and planning before you start cutting holes in it. Lots of good "how to" threads on the subject.

1/2 barrel kegs are durable, if not somewhat heavy, brewing vessels.

Stainless does not have a "shelf life". I'd make a boil kettle out of it if I were you. There are plenty of conversion kits out there that don't require welding. The only thing you have to do is cut the top out.

The best use of a keg, is to use it for legging or serving.

Imho, keggles are heavy and poorly shaped for a boil kettle, and can be a hassle to clean.

My advice would be to use it for kegging, and if it is too large, try and trade it for a 5 1/6 gallon snake sixtel
