Ventilation

I'm sure this has been talked about somewhere, but I couldn't find a good thread...

I assume I need to have ventilation for my brewing in the basement (electric). Batches will be 5-20 gallons.

I have on my hands a duct fan:

Is that good enough? Is there a popular method of venting? I was thinking of getting a craigslist kitchen hood and mounting somehow with this fan.

Any input/advice, or bump to an existing thread is appreciated.

Boiling will produce a lot more steam than you realize. You need something that will move a lot of air.

The best method is a commercial vent hood, the cheapest method is an open basement window with a fan placed in the window. Both methods work, prices vary from about $30 to $1,000.00.

Trying to do this on the cheap compared to electric brewery. Is there a minimum cfm needed for a 5-20 gallon brew? I imagine the vent is only needed for the boil, right?

that is the same fan i got, but i have the 8" 450cfm one. I would recommend the bigger one. 200cfm just is not that much. i use it in a brew room using gas. Works flawlessly. Just remember to have a fresh air intake somewhere. You have to replace the air you are taking out of the room, or it will not vent well. I have a 12x12 grille in the door to my room. I got a filter grille, so i dont get as much dust threw it. Luckly, i own a heating company, so i have grilles and fans and such lying around.

Thanks for sharing the link to your thread. I didn't consider the amount of different factors that will determine how many CFMs you need to pull.

For me, I will be working right next to a window. It gets cold where I live, so I don't want to have the window open, but if I'm realistically only moving it 6ft out of the house, maybe I don't need many CFM.

Theres a used 350 CFM hood for sale. Only $25. Might test it out and see how it goes...

I made a hood out of foil-lined insulation and T'd it into my bathroom vent. Used a Vortex fan like Kal's - https://www.homebrewtalk.com/photo/hood-64164.html

Search the site - there are TONs of ventilation ideas! You'll probably need parts of all of them to fit your environment. Like many have already said, boiling creates a lot of steam and you'll need some way to get rid of it to avoid mold issues.
