I'm not sure this is very relevant for us keggers since we typically use buna-n (nitrile) o-rings, which are indeed compatible with petroleum grease. Just wanted to clarify so folks don't take away the wrong message there.
 
I bought a tube of petrol-gel when I first started kegging. It says it's food safe, sanitary and is made for food safe applications. I don't remember how much I paid for it, probably less than $7, but after a year I still have about 90% of the tube left. And I take apart my kegs every use and re apply to all my poppets and o-rings.
