Forgive me I'm very new at this. I recently heard of adding flavor extracts to the latter end of a wort boil. For example, I want to try an extract kit porter and add vanilla extract or carmel extract. Is there any way to approximate in a formula the appropriate amount based on hop IBU, amount of water, etc? I don't want to just dump a bottle of flavor extract in there and ruin the whole thing.

I believe that what you are thinking of is adding them to the secondary or even the end of the primary fermentation. Adding fruit or other extracts to the boil is usually not recommended. If there are any specific recipes that you are considering, post them up and we will be glad to help out.

BTW welcome to the forum

Cheers
