Hi all, just wondering if using household non scented bleach is ok to use and does it sanitise as good as all the main stream brewing products out there?
Lewis, bleach will work just fine (this is from what I have read and knot what I know) . The recommendation is to rinse very well though with hot water.
Not sure if you are a new brewer or not. There are other sanitizations methods available. One is StarSan - it's a no rinse sanitizer. Another is.. is. Crap I can't remember the name right now.
It's Iodaphor! Great sanitizer from what I've read not sure if it is a non-rinse but think it is if used in proper quantity. The only thing I read bad about it is it will stain equipment - make plastics a yellowish orange. StarSan has it's fault too. If an undiluted drop makes its way to a counter top will leave an impermiable white stain.
Yes it is ok to use. That is what I started out with. But the chlorine smell of bleach can easily get in your beer so you have to rinse things really well, not to mention the fact that bleach needs about 30 minutes of soak time to sanitize and you don't want to use bleach with certain metals. I highly recommend just spending the money on star san and iodophors. They are expensive but work so fast that it is worth it. Star San is one of the best products out there for speeding up your brew day.
Cheers. I've only done 6 batches, done my first BIAB on Friday. I live in the UK and StarSan isn't easy to come by in the shops. I use VWP not sure if u have heard of it or not but its basically powered bleach, it cost quite a bit.
