Hi,

I am new, and about to start my third batch of beer. I started with the TrueBrew Bavarian Hefeweizen, and the first batch I made turned out so well that I though it was the best beer I had ever tasted, as did my neighbor and my boss! I then brewed a second batch, and this batch was good, but not as phenomenal. I noticed that the second batch came with the German Hallentauer hops, while the first came with the Liberty hops. I had found out that TrueBrew had indeed changed the ingredients.

No problem - I had saved the instructions of the first batch, and was able to find the Liberty hops on line. However, when comparing the instructions of the two sets, I realized that the older recipe, which I liked more, included listed 2 oz of the Liberty hops, while the new version had 1 oz of the Hallentauer. Then I started googleling the web for the TrueBrew with the Liberty hops, and found both 2 oz and 1 oz versions.

Which is the correct one? Could I have had better results in my second batch had I put in 2 oz of Hallentauer?

Any advice would be much appreciated before I do my third batch...

Liberty hops are an American version of Hallertauer. There are differences because of different climate and growing conditions.
I'm a little confused as to two recipes- 1 with 1oz, the other with 2oz. But, do they list the AA%? AA, as you may know, is an indication of how much bittering. Perhaps the 1oz. has an AA% of 4%(example), while the other has an AA% of 2%, therefore needing 2 packets to get an equivalent bitterness.
But, what it comes down to, you liked the version that used 2 oz of Liberty. So, yes you can buy 2 packets of Liberty and substitute them for the Hallertau.

That style should be 8-15 IBU's and would traditionally use German noble hops like Hallertau (Bavarian).

Thank you to both of you for those replies. I was thinking that maybe also doubling the Hallertau maybe getting the beer closer to the first batch.

This is interesting. The original recipe has 5 Hop bittering units, and the Alpha of the Liberty is 4.8%, suggesting that the original recipe used only one oz, not two, of Liberty. The new recipe does not list the AA% or the bittering units.

All I know is that the first batch ended up being phenomenal, the second good, but not knock-your-socks off.

I am from Germany, by the way, and am trying to stay close to an authentic taste. Wheat is the only thing I am interested in right now.
