I just tried my second ever batch of homebrew. It is Northern Brewer White House Honey Ale and it is not good. I am not seasoned enough to really describe the off flavor. I am thinking maybe it's rubbery. Is there anyone I the Lexington area who could try one and tell me what I messed up?

I'm in Lexington but I don't know I could tell you exactly what went wrong but could give it a shot I know some of the big things I just haven't made every mistake yet to know them all haha

Like a bandaid flavor? I think chlorophenols are described that way. Caused by chlorine or chloramine in your water. Treat with campden tablets or ascorbic acid to neutralize before brewing.

Or I could be completely wrong.

I use to have a plastic taste in my beer that didn't go away till I started using both campten and controlling fermentation temp with a fermentation chamber. If its the flavor I think it is the good news is it will fade with time but not go away completely.

I wouldn't really say it tastes like a bandaid, but someone else says Campden tablets as well. My water report says 3 ppm chloramine

I am hoping for someone with a lot of experience who is confident they can pin point it. It was a small batch (only 6 bottles left) so if it's something that can age out, I don't want to waste any so I can try them at intervals as a learning tool

I have had one that was really bandaid flavor and I think the big thing was fermentation I forgot and when the heat kicked on it was in a bad spot and got way too warm but I use the same water and have made more good than bad beer but have switched to using either spring water or water from my parents house that has gone through filter and water softener I just use the bottles from the spring water and fill em up again but honestly haven't seen a difference. If you want me to give it a try I'm in Lexington. PM me if you want contact info.

So I brought a bottle to my LHBS and asked one of them to try it. He declined, stating he is not very good at identifying problems. He did tell me that he very much doubts it is due to the chloramine, and said he has had a batch where 1 bottle tasted bad, most likely because of a contaminate in the bottle. I tried another bottle and it tasted better Hopefully the rest are good.

Not sure if The Beer Trappe or West 6th have one. I would either call them or ask Lex Beerworks if they have any suggestions
