So I had a split 10 gallon batch that I used Conan yeast in. I already kegged one and did a harvest on the yeast. When I was rinsing it, I had a hard time separating the yeast from the trub. I proceeded and ended up with a pretty nasty mix. Fast forward a couple weeks and I am doing the same on the other batch with the same yeast. I figured I did a bad job last time so I set out to do a better job washing the yeast this time.
I poured off the majority of beer remaining in the carboy, added about 1.5 liters of boiled water (cooled), mixed the cake into a slurry and dumped off into this Erlenmeyer. I don’t know how easy it is to see, but there is stratification at about 700 mL. Is that the yeast on the top layer? The bottom layer almost looks more pale or yeast like to me…. Thoughts?
This is my third washing attempt. I did the same procedure on another strain and worked perfectly. I ended up with very clean white yeast and it was easily discernible which was what. With the Conan I just can’t tell what I’m looking at?

Conan is pretty low flocc-ing. I think you need to give it more time to settle

But better idea: overbuild your starters and harvest from that before pitching. No yeast washing required

I have only tried to wash yeast once- it was Conan and it looks exactly like that. I thought I just messed up...
