Anyone done one? I got the kit from Williams. Had a quick and fast bubble for about 24 hours. Then a slow steady bubble for about 2 days. Now nothing. I know it doesn't have to bubble to be fermenting. Just wanted to know if it is ever too early to take a SG reading?

You can do anything with your beer. It's better to leave yeast to do the job until carboy clears up.

for ales such as this, I always wait at least 2 weeks before taking a reading. That's just me though.

ive also noticed that if look very carefully at the carboy i can see some activity going on.

I'm assuming you meant an FG reading.
You can take it whenever you want but I usually wait til bottling day at 4 weeks. If you are doing an extract kit and your water volumes are correct according to your recipe sheet, your FG should be close if not the same as the FG on the recipe sheet.
