I haven't had time to post in a while but I just finished welding up a plate chiller for my own brewery so I figured I owed you guys a little brewery porn :ban:

There are tri clover temp probes that go with it to monitor I/O temps.

The only bummer is it isn't truly sanitary. Although I back-gassed the entire chiller with argon while I was welding, being a socket weld there is no way for me to get a sanitary weld. No matter though; with this whole plate chiller design I plan on baking it at 350* before brewing anyway.

Can't wait to be brewing again!
 
That is pretty nice looking. I wouldn't mind having something like that on my plate chiller, but I'm willing to settle for the camlocks for now.
 
Wow....I think I might just want to do a plate chiller now. What size chiller/how many plates is that?

Thanks everyone! I'll be sure to post back how well it works once I actually get to brew again. Between not having had my own brewery since January, building a bunch of cool custom stuff for people and then sitting in on a water chemistry lecture at my LHBS by none other than John Palmer; I've been motivated to at least get my brewery able to brew!

The chiller itself is a 30 plate chiller from Duda with 1" socket-weld fittings.
 
So how did you do the socket weld? The tees don't come with a socket weld option, did you just chop them and insert into the chiller port....then weld? I considered buying long butt weld ferrules in the 1" size, but I'm not sure they'd fit, and wonder if the flange wouldn't overlap and interfere with the adjoining port.

I cut a flange off, then faced the end on my lathe, then polished it before welding it. I just barely slid them together in an effort to reduce any internal pocket.

Long ferrules will not work without an extension, the ports are too close together and need some breathing room to get clamps in there.
 
That is freakin' AWESOME Derrin.....as usual! I got your stir plate Monday by the way. It is a work of art.
Are you going to add this chiller to your product lineup?
 
I realize I'm resurrecting a 3 year old thread here, but I'm curious if you ever used this chiller, and how it was holding up.

Amazingly this is the only home-brew sized plate chiller that I have seen that has been adapted for TC fittings. I am planning to order a chiller from Duda Diesel with the socket weld fittings so that I can adapt it similarly, but I'm curious to know if your experience was good or bad with this approach. Any detrimental effects from not having a truly sanitary weld? Any infection problems that you attributed to the chiller? Would you do this again? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
