So, I decided to make an electric brew panel. We're buying a house this year, and instead of having to wait, I figured I'd slowly hoard the stuff now, build my panel, and hit the ground running.

For around a year, I have been collecting parts and this past weekend I finally put the panel together.

I bought the enclosure for $40 on Craigslist. It came with a cover, but I wanted to have it waterjet cut, and I was quoted between $150-$200. Then, I'd be ordering plastic tags to use as labels - those were another $50. Completely by accident, I found a company online (bigbluesaw.com) who laser cuts and engraves, and I decided to have the entire panel cut out of acrylic. Not exactly up to code - arc flash is and will always be a concern - but I am confident with my design and wiring.

Anyways, I wish I had started a build thread, but it's never too late.

Here's where I'm at now:

The signal tower:
(going to be green when nothing is on or amber when pumps and/or elements are on, and flashing red when a PID/timer alarm is triggered)

As soon as I saw the guy at bigbluesaw could make it out of acrylic, I KNEW i wanted LED side lighting. The LED strips were short money on eBay out of China. I even found ones that were 3mm wide - just about exactly the same as my .177 acrylic.
Here's a pic I took lighting it up with just my phone:

SO, I still have to...
  • Add the safe-start circuit
  • Build the frame/border (to hide the LED strip)
  • hardware into the house (when we get a house lol)
  • configure the PIDs (anyone with Auber experience?)

Thanks guys - looks like i'm going to get the PIDs configured today after work - probably get the signal tower mounted and connected as well.

I'm just waiting on the relay for the safe start interlock, as well as the extra contact blocks for that same circuit.

Got that video uploaded yesterday - not sure why it looks like I filmed it with a potato...

Now that is cool to the point its artistic! Sort of like one of those see-through engines that were popular a few decades ago. The signage is brilliant.

Way cool! If it were me I'd blare some BeeGee's and have some fun making a video about it. For what it's worth the mill electron motivators add acrylic in front of arc flashy stuff for added protection when working on open cabinets.

I wouldn't want anyone to see the poor wiring in my control box! (As well I'm from the pre "computers as bling" era.):D

wow....you must know a guy that got your holes lined up for you on that panel!

Updated video, before the safe start system is connected.

Pardon the fact that it's FILTHY and needs a good cleaning. :)

got a link for the led sidelight strips?

I checked eBay and they weren't relisted, but they're 4MM strip LEDs. I got .177 acrylic, so 4mm fit perfect. If you went with .25, you'd be looking for 6mm LEDs.

I bought 2x 90cm strips in one auction for only $10.99 - 18x18 panel has 72" of border to light - 182CM. the 2 90CM sections worked perfect.
Similar product: (though this is only 50cm)

Then I got 3/4" x 1/8" thick foam tape. I built my frame so that it would be lined with foam tape and fit snug while providing some light weatherproofing and you won't see screw holes (or have to unscrew it to service if needed).

It all fits together perfectly - yay planning.
blue is the acrylic, red is the foam, and yellow is the led strip.
