After I boil and cool my wort, should I let it settle for a few minutes to let some of the sediment settle out or should the suspended stuff go into the primary?

You can whirlpool, https://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/Whirlpooling
That forces the sediment into the center of the pot so you siphon from the edge after you let it sit for 15-20 minutes or so. But, there is not really any harm in getting all the suspended stuff into the fermenter if that's what you're worried about.

I try to whirlpool before I put it into the primary so that there is less that needs to settle out.

Either way is good. I used to pour the wort from the kettle into my fermenter leaving only the thickest trub. If it was not too thick I would just pour it all in.

I now have a kettle with a valve and use a paint strainer bag to keep the hops contained and drain almost all of the wort into the fermenter.

If you get trub etc into the fermenter it will settle and compact after the active fermentation has subsided.
