Whats a good figure to use for total mash volume, grains and water? This section is a little confusing on How to Brew Appendix D, so please don't just refer me to that.

2 quarts per lb?

EDIT:

I guess a better question would be, what is the volume of a lb of grain, since mash volume differs per brewer preference

start with 1.33 QT per # and go from there. Its a good start if you have 20# of grain x 1.33=26.6 devide by 4=6.65 gal in the mash
Good luck
JJ
