Hello all-

I have been lurking this forum for awhile as I have been learning as much as I can about home brewing. I have made a couple extract beers from Mr. Beer and Cooper's and am preparing to produce an extract/grain combo in an attempt to come close to my favorite beer: SN Torpedo

I plan to make a 5 gallon batch.

I am going to try the list of ingredients that follows-

9.5 lbs. of light ale LME

.5 lbs. of Crystal 60L (steeped)

1oz. Magnum @ 45min.

1 tsp. Irish moss @ 15min.

1oz. liberty @ 5min.

1oz. Magnum @ 5min.

Dry Hop

.5oz Magnum
.5oz. liberty
.5oz. Citra

This is my first brew w/ grain and hops. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Pete

One more thing. Can I steep my .5lbs. of grain in the 2 gallons that I am adding the LME into?

Yes you can steep in that water no prob. Some people like to steep in a seperate pot so they can get the full boil (or majority of the boil if not doing full boils) going in another pot to save time but it isn't required.
Where is the recipe from? Looks tasty, but other than I know sn uses crystal hops instead of liberty (not too big a deal), I am curious as it is one of my favorites as well would love a clone recipe

I have been researching Torpedo clones on-line and I reached this recipe from some all-grain recipes and talking w/ my local home brew shop owner.

I went ahead and brewed it up and I reached an OG of 1.064 so I will keep you posted on the results.

We didn't have crystal hops so we chose Liberty per his experience. I sure hope it turns out nice!

Got a case in the fridge and going to have one now. Let me know how it goes. What temp will you ferment at and what yeast will you use?

For a starter I boiled up a quart(total) of light Ale LME and added safale-05. I let this sit at 66-68 degrees for around 24 hours. It was really rockin' when I pitched it so I think it was a pretty good start.

I plan to hold it at at no higher than 68 degrees right now in a nice cool closet. we are in N. Idaho so cool starting temps. aren't a problem.

sound good?

Will do. I am going to let it sit in Primary for three weeks before dry hopping the magnum, liberty and citra.

I had to move my stout to secondary(5gal. better bottle) last night to free up my 6.5 fermenter. I tasted it and checked the gravity. It is dropping nicely and it tasted really good(young but good).

I really didn't want to move it, but WTH I guess I learned that I need a little more equipment. I think it siphoned well and shouldn't have any oxidation problems.

The tor-pete-o is bubbling like crazy right now under temp of 68 degrees. It is going to be a tough wait to see how it comes out.

Depending on how this batch turns out, I think that I am going to go for it next run and brew an All-grain recipe.

I am hoping this will be somewhat close to the tricerahops double IPA as well. I had one tonight and thought it might be close. I am excited to see the outcome.

I'm researching a Tricerahops clone as well, so I can't wait to see how this turns out. From Ninkasi's website, they list Tricerahops as:

OG: 1.080
IBUs: 100
ABV: 8.8%

Using BeerSmith, it seems like you'll hit around 50 IBUs and 6% ABV. It would seem that Ninkasi uses quite a bit more hops in the boil. Not sure if they dry hop, but wouldn't rule it out.

Also, Tricerahops has this thick malty body, which makes me think an extra grain with more malt potential is needed. The beer has an interesting complexity that is hard to pin down.

Post your results!

@Kleggo- Will do, I have found some more info on the tricerahops and I have found some good recipes. Mine is going to be on the lighter side, yet I will let you know.

I was following this thread about the same clone.

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f37/sierra-nevada-torpedo-clone-165501/

I think his recipe didn't have quite what it takes to reach 7.2% ABV, where yours probably will. Subscribed. Let us know how it turns out!

I followed this thread too. I made a few changes.

.5# Rahr 2-row
.5# Crystal 60L
7# Golden Light DME
1.5oz German Magnum 12.3% AA (60 min)
.5oz Crystal 2.8% AA (5min)
1.0oz German Magnum 12.3% AA (5min)
1272 Wyeast Smack Pack

.5oz German Magnum 12.3 %AA (dry)
.5oz Crystal 2.8% AA (dry)
1.0oz Citra 12.3% AA (dry)

Steeped the grains in 2gal water at 155*F for 30 min. Removed grainbag and squeezed it. Brought to a boil and added my DME. Boiled again then added the hops as scheduled. Added hot wort to fermenter and added cool water to reach my 5gals. Pitched yeast at 70*F. Fermented at 63*F for 2 weeks with dry hopping the last week. OG:1.075. FG: 1.016.

The beer was close to the torpedo, but really mellowed out as time went on. Im going to brew this again this sunday but making some modifications with the hops. Going to add a few more ounces of Magnum and also use Cascade as I wasnt able to buy Crystal from the wholesaler. The Citra I will use the same amount.

Patiently waiting, meanwhile enjoying Ninkasi's and Torpedo.

@Bigbopper- The Rockies are still as beautiful as every. We got five foot of snow above 4,000ft. this week. This should make for some good riding this weekend. I ride up around Trestle Creek and Priest Lake, that is close to your old area.

:mug:

Dry Hopping tonight. I am going to use

1oz. Citra
1oz. Magnum raw
1oz. crystal pellets
.5oz. Liberty raw(due to I have it left over and WTH factor)

Tasted good for a flat IPA. Gonna be around 6.4%ABV

The dry hops are going to really set it off.

I racked and dry hopped on the 9th. So I will probably bottle on the 19th. I can't wait to taste this beer out of the bottle.

OK, men! I am bottling the Tor-pete-o, couple more weeks and we will see how she is. I already have another 5 gallons of a similar recipe going.

OK, one week in the bottle and I tried one tonight...It is good! The citra hops that I dry hopped with is still pretty strong but it is a very good tasting beer. I am drinking a SN Torpedo side by side right now am happy w/ this young beer. After a couple weeks when the citra settles down this is gonna be a killa!:rockin:

Nailed it! still a little cloudy, but taste test sez it all. couple weeks in the bottle and this beer is that crisp, hoppy Torpedo.

Little extra info. I did the steep in a smaller amount of water and I made a weak 2.5 pounds of LME wort along w/ the wort from the grains to boil the hops in my 60 min. boil. I added the remainder of the LME @ 15mins. I have a 5.5 gallon pot so I boiled about four gallons.

Here is a visual comparison to my favorite beer SN Torpedo. I had one last night after two weeks in the bottle and it's getting better. I am trying to wait another week and then fridge it for a week before drinking it down!!!

Just wanted to chime in and say...This Tor-pete-o just keeps getting better! Drinking a 22oz. and thinking that I might want to take it easy!

Sounds fantastic! Glad to hear it turned out so well.

On a related note, my Tricerahops clone is tasting great after only a week. I could be in the same smooth tasting trouble.

Please share that recipe w/ me. I am brewing this weekend. I am setting up for AG. My system was inspired by this youtube video.

Just wanted to chime in and say...This Tor-pete-o just keeps getting better! Drinking a 22oz. and thinking that I might want to take it easy!

Just a suggestion to make it even more legit next time. SN beers are unfiltered so you can propagate the yeast from the Torpedo bottle dregs and use it in your next batch!

I propagated SN Kellerweis yeast and use it in all of my Hefeweizen's. IMO its better than WLP300. I did the same with Bell's Two Hearted IPA and use it in all of my IPA's. It's fun to do and cool to know that you're one of select few who brew with Sierra Nevada's proprietary yeast.

Anyway, Torpedo is a great beer and I'm glad it turned out well.

You inspired me to begin propagating from my torpedo. I have since converted this recipe to AG. I will be brewing a ten gallon batch tomorrow. Just waiting on a big starter.

That's fantastic!! Let me know how it turns out! I think I might brew this for the fall.
