Did my second AG batch today, first full boil. It was Yooper's Cali common. I mashed with 3.5 gal, 2 gal mash out, and 3.5 gal sparge. It was to be a 7 gallon boil and a 5.5 batch. I did use an extra quarter pound of 60l.

It can out at around 6.5 gallons but hit the OG of 1.050.

I am confused as to how this is possible. You would figure that more water would lead to lower OG. I did squeeze down on the grain bed to get all the wort out. Could that be it?

Thanks for any input.

One follow up. I have about 1.5 inch of head space. I put a sanitized tube in to the geo met directly, as that is what I assume a blowoff looks like. How much risk of a lid blow off do I have?

With 1.5", you'll likely sully the blowoff water. Shouldn't paint any walls, though, so there's that.
