other than making a mess on the floor, can any damage come to the beer from it being just too vigorous,

i did a yeast starter 1 liter; and here i am the next morning and there's tons of foam everywhere.

i did five gallons in a 6 gallon carboy, there's like 2.5 inches of head space, didn't help, it blew the cap off the airlock.

since it's all pushing out, is there any infection risk here ?

Nope, no worries. As you can see everything is pushing out, so there really isn't any way for nasties to get in.. Just clean it up with sanitizer and you should be fine. Next time use a blow off tube instead of an airlock and that should contain the mess..

i'd planned a blowoff tube , but figured making five gallons instead of six made that unnecessary. ... learning curve.
