For those of you still smarting from/revelling in (delete as appropriate) the results of your election last week spare a thought for us here in the UK. I think I just watched democracy take a hell of a pounding yesterday. If its not out for the count it'll have a tick and mutter to itself after anyone walks past....
We had national elections yesterday to put in place Police and Crime Ccommissioners (PCCs) for all our English and Welsh police forces ( called constabularies here with our penchant for Orwellian language). Most of these constabularies managed a 20% electoral turnout and the voting system used means many of the new PCCs have been elected with a mandate of 6%, you read that right 6%, of the electorate.
In one constabulary area Dominos pizza held a Pizza Election to try and make some marketing collateral out of a slow thursday in November and more local people voted for their favourite topping than turned out for the real election!
This cost us £100 million to run, against a backdrop of cuts in policing because there isn't enough money....
I think I'll respond by trying to RWDWHAKOHB and forget the whole thing ever happened.
