brewed a midwest kit scotish ale 80/-

called for a 90 min boil

so after reading about full boils I did a 4 gal boil

added 1/4 lme and 1/4 dme at start of boil

at 60 min called for second hops addition

I set the timer for 20 min and added the rest of the lme/dme at 10 min before

flameout

everything went well but recipe said og should be 1.048 - 1.054

mine was 1.061

fg suppose to be 1.012-1.014

wonder what this will finish out as?

:mug:

Assuming this was primarily an extract batch and your finish volume was correct then chances are bettter that your wort was unevenly mixed when you took the reading.

this had steeping grains and yes I topped it to 5 gal

used a large whisk for 5 min or so and took the sample

let sit till bubbles went away

What was your recipe? If it's mostly extract, it's pretty easy to figure out the numbers.

How did you take the reading?

This is copied from Midewest's site

" 6 lbs. Gold liquid malt extract, 1 lb. Amber DME, 4 oz. Biscuit, 8 oz. Caramel 40°L, 4 oz. Chocolate, 2 oz. Special B, 1 oz. Peat malt specialaty grains, .5 oz. Perle, 1 oz. Tradition, priming sugar, muslin bag, and yeast."

When I typed these numbers into Beer Smith I got 1.058. That isn't very far off the 1.061 you have. I wouldn't worry.
