Thermowell near heating element?

I am about to install a thermowell into my 10 gallon rubbermaid HLT, which already has a heating element coming through the center of the bottom. How should I configure/where should I put my thermowell, such that it is not directly next to the heating element, as I assume that would throw off the correct temperature? Thanks!
