I was just trying to briefly explain the offside rule for Joker. I fail at teaching it to women too.

That much I do understand about the game although its another part I really don't understand since it can be exploited a bit by the defense. However, if I recall (been looking for a highlight) their was a defender near post on the goal line. Pretty tough to be offsides if that is the case.

That is why I was wondering if there was some other call. I will say for being cheated of the first goal and possibly of winning the game Mexico took it awfully well.

I think ESPN shuts down the stream between games.

The defender on the line was in-active when the offence was commited, therefore, he does matter.
I hope this clears the matter up, and if anyone else wants the "off-side" rulings clarified, please do not hesitate to ask, as sometimes I have n`t got a clue myself.

Don't get too involved with the offside rule, they tinker with it every Wednesday afternoon after a liquid lunch.

It is. I'm not which rule though, could be "Ungentlemanly conduct"

Edit: the rules are not always strictly applied. The ref often uses his discretion in minor cases in order to keep the game moving. Sometimes he will also (Wrongly) try to make ammends for earlier mistakes by letting a foul slide. He could also just be a biased ahole.

Well they have covered the Mexico goal many times now and say it was offsides. I missed the reason but it must have been the correct call.

^^^ when the goalie went out for the ball technically he was the last defender in front of the net, so when the ball got passed to the mexican he was in an offsides position. doesnt matter if its the goalie or a forward, at least one defender has to be in front of you when the ball is played. offsides has nothing to do with the goalie, the last defender is what the rule is about.

Yep. Offsides is determined by the second last defender or the ball, whichever is closest to the endline. Ordinarily, the keeper is the last man back so the second last defender is the last field player.

The refs got it right. The announcer, however, didn't have a clue.

Speaking of refs, the first two games were generally well-officiated. Except for the handling of the send-off of the uruguayan player. His second caution should have been a straight red. It seems like splitting hairs, but he almost split that Frenchman's leg right in front of the bench.

Studs up into the side of the leg when the ball is long gone = red card. That player should have been sent off for serious foul play - which sometimes gets slapped with harsher penalties than a sendoff for a second caution. Depending on the league.
