Beats me. No idea who Great Notion is.Out of curiosity, how do your friends feel about Great Notion and the pricing there?
They're home grown and one is an institution. Like Lost Abbey.2 of the most expensive breweries I've ever been to are Cascade and Hair of the Dog. Anyone think Portland would put up with their prices?
So yeah, there's some context in your friends' reaction to Modern Times. They're not in the same class as an old-school Portland brewery who's slinging pints of pale ale, IPA, and oatmeal stout. It's not their business model and it makes as much sense to compare them to McMenamins up there as it does to compare them with Gordon Biersch down here. Great Notion is at the forefront of establishing the new wave of craft beer geekery in Portland - for better or worse - and Modern Times inhabits a closer position in the ecosystem to them than it does to most other breweries. If you want to compare pricing and such, they'd be a better measuring stick than what's going on at some of the old school places...not a defense ($7/5oz is objectively expensive, whether or not I feel the beers are worth it is simply my own preference), it just makes more sense contextually.Beats me. I'm sure both MT and Great Notion are targeting hipster shitlords in their 20's. Which is not the demographic for myself and friends. So yeah, there's some context in your friends' reaction to Modern Times. They also managed to capture mid-30s degenerates with their pitch, I guess their cadre of marketing experts deserves extra credit. I tried so hard to resist, but the lifestyle their brands represent was simply too compelling...thankfully, I've ended up enjoying the beer anyway, so it all worked out.I'm sure both MT and Great Notion are targeting hipster shitlords in their 20's. Your lawn: should we get off of it?I'm sure both MT and Great Notion are targeting hipster shitlords in their 20's. Which is not the demographic for myself and friends.
I'm just happy to have gone through most of my hardcore beer geek phase when things were reasonably priced. $7/5oz better deliver a happy ending.
I do wonder what will happen during the next deep recession for the "next wave" of breweries who charge a premium. Is it because their lease and cost of business is so high? Or are they charging a premium based on hype. Either way, no way to tell till it happens.
The whole point of the article was MT prices are above industry standards in PDX. End Stop.
After the new shine wears off it will be interesting to see how they fair. You can't necessarily compare the two markets as they have different cultures. Most likely they'll probably do fine.
You’re only money!It's only money.
I bought guys some Dickle Rye over the weekend and am very happy for the $20 price tag. (I just now realized an unintended joke...)I really enjoy MT beers, probably my favorite all around brewery (beer wise) in SD. I have always felt they have high end product with high end pricing. I would like to buy more but choose not to due to the price, instead I buy more of PP. I would love to buy Blanton's more often, but choose to buy Woodford instead, #talkbourbon. Between the pricing and not overall enjoying the atmosphere and setup of strippertorium I tend to just get MT beer sparingly and to go. But I am also a cheap ass.
Sure. I really don't care that much, I was commenting on the article. They may do just fine.Than the point was terrible. Cascade and Hair of the Dog do just fine there.
What, the creepy as **** MJ mural doesn't do it for you?I really enjoy MT beers, probably my favorite all around brewery (beer wise) in SD.
