We’re getting close. Anchor did a Joe Joe’s stout for Trader Joe’s.
And it was painfully mediocre at best. I impulse bought it based on the mix of Anchor and Joe Joe's and sat there and drank the whole thing because...well, I don't have a good reason. Sad excuse for an adjunct stout and I really wanted to like it, since the Trader Joe's contract projects - especially with Unibroue - are generally good.

I didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it, but wasn’t as blown away as everyone else seems to be. o_O
Its pretty good but TBH he should stick with the more traditional stuff. The dude is a homebrew IPA God, no need to chase the haze train. Can beers like Hop Fu, Warped Plates and especially Scolari's and I will line the **** UP for that ****.

Okay guys, I'm going to go into newbie mode here: any under-the-radar places I should be checking out next month while I'm in SD? I'm planning to have a car so anything within an hour or two is feasible. I know all the usual stuff that everyone else does, mostly looking for smaller breweries etc that I might not have heard much/anything about. Also, what are the best options (if any) around the Convention Center? This is unfortunately going to be a work-heavy conference (as opposed to last time I was in town, where I gave a talk, hung out for 30 minutes, and otherwise just did beer stuff).

the coffee chocolate one is really good. Especially for $4

Close to the convention center/downtown, Resident is your best bet and then Half Door. If you didn't get a cheesesteak from Monkey Paw the last time you were here, it's a worthy downtown-ish stop too. Hit all 3 when you're exhausted from convention fun but still want to go get a beer.

For the new places to check out, Eppig is a must hit if you're looking for lagers. North Park Beer Co has also really stepped up their game in the past year (was pretty new at that time), so I would stop in there/spend time in the neighborhood to hit Toronado and Tiger Tiger. Burgeon is a great new brewery about 40 minutes from SD proper (located in Carlsbad), and if you make it up that far, maybe check out Wild Barrel too, although I have not visited myself.

Wouldn't hurt to hit up Bottlecraft if you're going to NPBC - it's literally across the street, and sometimes they have some interesting stuff on tap that other places typically don't get.

Rip Current North Park is always worth a trip as well - and IIRC, Second Chance just opened a new tasting room on 30th Street as well. They don't make the best beer, but you'd be surprised at some of their lineup.

Also if you want to touch tips, I'm down.

One other rec for new places would be Bar Sin Nombre. Probably only ~15-20 minutes from downtown, it's a new beer bar in Chula Vista. I haven't been so I cannot speak from personal experience, but they had a pretty big grand opening with some pretty awesome stuff on tap (Cantillon, Sante, Monkish, Upright, etc). The prices also look lower than I would expect, and they have super nintendo going constantly.

Has anyone checked Bar Sin Nombre out yet? I don't remember seeing much discussion on this thread.

Not surprised at the lack of discussion. We're all old farts who hate new things and tend to drink in the comfort of their own homes because beer in a bar is too expensive.

That said, another thing that is probably worth checking out is brunch at Small Bar - or just going to Small Bar period.

I could care less about Kiwi Herman. I don’t understand why there’s such a demand for it. Outside Chez Monus, I’ve never been enthralled by Alpine/Green Flash sours.
The entire whale history of Chez Monus is fascinating to me. That's a beer that more or less went completely unnoticed by anyone other than SoCal beer nerds. I bought enough bottles of it that I put it in as an extra in some of my boxes, and nobody thought anything of it. Then, like a year or two after its release, Midwest shitlords suddenly flooded forums with some of the most ludicrous trades.

My theory is that some FIB shared their bottle at a crazy share, and everyone lost their ****, judging the quality of the beer based on a 1oz pour. From there the hysteria spread, and Kiwi Herman is still riding that wave.

I can buy that, but we have some many excellent peach (and other stone fruit sours) that are easier to obtain from Lost Abbey.

.

I would also hit up Burning Beard out in El Cajon. The only issue there is that is basically it for the area

If there is such a thing as old New Money, that's the demo that just bought Kiwi Herman.

****! I guess I am somehow in that demo then because I bought my 2 bottles.

Oh I totally agree. FWIW I tried a bottle a year ago and it was way downhill, a straight up acetone bomb on the nose and super artificial apple juice on the palate.

Interesting, the bottle that was opened at Grand Ole this past weekend tasted nothing like that. Still stone fruits popping, although less so than I believe I can recall.

Definitely down to touch tips.

My favorite is when people post ISO/FT/sale/etc posts and just type "Chez". I really hope at some point, a trade or sale gets done where it's never actually clarified that Monus is the bottle in question, and someone gets sent a Monieux instead.

One of my friends was set to send off his "Chez," and for some reason he actually had the crazy idea to ask them which beer they were referring to. Surprisingly, the other party wanted Monieux. Buddy had to confirm a few times before finally relenting and sending him that bottled cheesefeet.

Have you been to places like Small Bar, Monkey Paw, Fathom?

p.s. there is also Scrimshaw's Ship ;)
