Hey guys. Pittsburgh resident here looking for some brewery advice for Northern Ohio. I am heading back to my home town in Grand Rapids, MI and usually make a stop at Vintage Estates and Hoppin' Frog on the way. Looking for advice on some other potential breweries in Northern Ohio that you think I should stop and check out. Looks like there are a few in Toledo.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance and cheers!

You might want to check out Maumee Bay. They have sold beer and good food. I've only been to the black Cloister once, it was OK. I just never make it downtown (or to bars) all that often.

I would suggest Joseph beverage center, Marino's, and all 3 Andersons locations if your looking for places to go.

Hello Ohioans

I will be in independence OH for business 6/21-6/23 and was looking for some local info on what bars/ bottle shops are in that area that are can't miss. I will have a car so I can travel a bit if there's something really good near by. Thanks in advance for the help.

Brewery-wise, Fat Head's, Brew Kettle and Willoughby Brewing, in that order.

You're in luck. Independence has a Winking Lizard. Good bar food with 100's of craft bottles and draft available. You can buy bottles there to go. Most people don't do that, but you can if you want to.

Or hit Melt Bar and Grilled. Smaller bottle and taplist compared to Winking Lizard. Still has a solid list. They have oversized grilled cheese sandwiches. They are awesome if you want a food coma.

I hit up Melt and Winking lizards while I was out there, also found some schramms mead sitting on the shelves!

Thanks for suggestions

Anyone gonna drop that $100 on the Bodhi release? Could be a good time and seems like a decent enough deal for a case, 2 variant pours, shirt, glass, tote. Not sure i really wanna commit to a whole damn case of their first ever bottled batch though. TB tip touch or nah?

I was planning on going but after getting home from Colorado, I can't justify that $100 and soon enough I'll just be able to buy it regularly. If someone wants to trade me a 4 pack then I'm game.

I've got to say nah on this one, especially when you can get it on the shelves soon much. It's good, Creeper is better. Just trying to increase the profit margin for one day on a beer that's fallen behind. Fresh on tap is a great beer. It's like getting a case of Zombie Dust and trying to convince yourself that it's still good after 3 or 4 weeks.

I'm also a jaded SOB though.

Ya that's about where i landed with my decision as well. Ohio Brew Week kicks off that day too so i might take a daytrip down to Athens. Hoping Jackie O's taps some good stuff and isnt holding out for the release.

It is but I was hoping with bodhi now being packaged they would lighten up on that stance for all their beers.

This was from an article last year. I think it funny they don't like crowlers. To me it's a better solution than a glass growler if you won't bottle or can your beer, but that's my opinion.

http://drinkupcolumbus.com/2015/06/12/daily-growler-crowler/

Corder says Columbus Brewing Company’s main concern with their beers being Crowler’d concern the permanence of the product.

‘It’s essentially a large can; it is seamed and sealed like any other canned beer, except it is filled from a draft line,” Corder said. “We do not feel any retailer has the right to repackage our beer in whichever vessel they choose, and that’s essentially what’s happening. Glass and stainless growlers have been clearly established as temporary, refillable vessels, intended for immediate consumption. The Brewers Association even has guidelines on how growlers should be handled and filled. The Crowler is not refillable and it is permanently sealed until someone opens it.”

Columbus Brewing Company is certainly not the only brewery to set standards about how their beer can be handled by retailers – many larger breweries have staff dedicated to monitoring how their beer is stored and sold, and several breweries don’t allow their beer to be used for growler fills at all.

“Our issue is not really with ‘Crowlers’ per se,” Corder said. “There are a number of breweries that fill Crowlers out of their own taproom. We may even decide to do it ourselves one day. But the point is that [the brewery is] the one doing it, not a retailer twice removed from the brewery.”

“We understand that consumers just want beer,” Corder added. “It’s not their job to worry about things like this. Most just want to take the beer home and drink it. But that’s why it’s our job as a brewery to have policies on these things and encourage that our beer is handled the way we feel it should.”
